If you are the kind of woman who looks cool in skinny jeans and ankle boots...

What sort of tops and jackets do you wear and where do you buy them?

I've lost weight and feel like my casual wardrobe could do with kick up the bum. I bought some great underwear, 3 pairs of skinny jeans (navy, grey & dark blue) plus 2 pairs of ankle boots (black suede & mushroom suede with cowboy heel) but am a bit stuck about what to do up top.

I'm 36, a size 12 (just!!), have medium size boobs (34c), a wobbly tum, blonde bob and blue eyes. Neutral or bright colours suit me best. What sort of stuff should I be looking at? Where can I buy it? Also I'm a tightarse on a budget.

A tailored jacket over a round neck top, usually. Maybe a scarf.

molesbreath · 24/09/2014 18:47

I do this look and my jackets are from zara Hobbs and topshop mostly, although I saw a lovely tweed one in sainsburys last year which I regret not buying.

Longer t shirt top to cover rum and big scarf Grin

mothermirth · 24/09/2014 18:50

I find a baggy jumper useful for keep my rum under wraps molesbreath Grin

PorkyMinch · 24/09/2014 18:51

Scarfy Mcscarfington here. Long vest and a jacket or thin jumper with a scarf. My neck hasn't seen daylight in years.

mooth · 24/09/2014 20:47

A little tweed jacket, or an ancient but still cool Karen Millen beige leather biker jacket, or a shaggy fake fur car coat. With scarves, always.

bettereveryday · 24/09/2014 20:53

now i do white/light blue shirt with tweed Jacket over or All saints leather jacket...when it gets cooler Ill wear a different thiner leather jacket and a fake fur gilet over it or longer shaggy/loopy wool sleveless cardi...and a big scarf..

BravePotato · 24/09/2014 21:28

I like a long fitted tee and an oversized scarf, or leather jacket

But not sure I am cool!

Artistic · 24/09/2014 21:44

Try long tops from Dorothy Perkins & Monsoon. They work quite well with skinny jeans & boots. You are exactly the same size & shape as me. Smile

burnishedsilver · 24/09/2014 22:28

Mint Velvet and Clarks would usually be my first ports of call.

foxdongle · 24/09/2014 22:51

I love these looks,

I wouldn't have the sunglasses on the shirt front :)

I'm wearing a lot of mannish type shirts at the moment, sort of half tucked in at the front. It's an effortless way to disguise a less than flat stomach!

singaporeswing · 25/09/2014 03:43

Seconding the mannish shirts, I also love them with a thin cashmere jumper over the top with the collar coming through.

I wear this look a lot with leather jackets, particularly an aviator jacket.

Living in the tropics is really making me crave these type of outfits!

DontDrinkAndFacebook · 25/09/2014 03:52

I think the main rule for being able to look great in skinnies is to be long legged (preferably) and slim of leg definitely.

Even if you are apple shaped you can cover your middle with loose top, but if you have short chunky legs and a low slung bum you will always look like a parsnip in skinnies, especially with flat shoes.

I would love to wear them but sadly I must stick to my bootleg mum jeans. Sad

mysteryfairy · 25/09/2014 06:50

OP you said you have great underwear but 34c doesn't sound like medium boobs to me - it sounds like small boobs on a quite broad torso (or broad for a 12 at least). Sorry this is becoming a mumsnet cliche to ask but have you had a bra intervention? Because if not there might be potential to improve your silhouette even more.

Longer t shirt top to cover rum

Molesbreath, it's great you've taken this first step by telling us about the rum. Have you thought about going to AA?

[sorry, could not resist] Grin

TeaAndALemonTart · 25/09/2014 07:37

Bra intervention didn't work for me. Sad

ACheesePuff · 25/09/2014 07:42

I've got a cream leather blazer which I wear with either a t-shirt or blouse under, black or dark blue skinnies and black ankle boots.

PuppyMonkey · 25/09/2014 07:45

Cover your bum in skinny jeans. That's the only rule IMHO. Grin

AppleSnapple · 25/09/2014 07:46

Can I ask (and I really don't mean to derail!) about this bra intervention business... Do you just mean wearing a tighter bra with bigger cups? I am a paltry 38B size 12-14 but I think my back is sufficiently huge to warrant the 38 so I've never delved too deeply into the bra threads,.. Should I?!

Ignore that if you wish as completely off topic! Thankfully have nice-ish legs so I would wear a light top and blazer type look, with one of my many thousand (approx!) scarves

AppleSnapple · 25/09/2014 07:48

Scratch that, sorry... Have just seen a big active bra intervention thread, apols, as you were etc ...

Cric · 25/09/2014 07:53

Look on the wallis website. Some lovely tops to go with skinny jeans and on sale Smile

SpaghettiMeatballs · 25/09/2014 08:15

I am getting into Wallis. Bought 3 tops from there which look nice with skinny jeans and ankle boots.

CulturalBear · 25/09/2014 09:41

I am watching as am trying to nail this look... however, I am at risk of parsnipping, as DontDrinkAndFacebook puts it...

carrie74 · 25/09/2014 09:53

I quite like the super long Baukjen tops with a cashmere jumper and scarf kind of look (I wore exactly this, but with trainers last night, and a friend described me as "normcore" which made me giggle that (a) she'd heard the term and (b) that she thought I was actually trying to achieve the look), or a jacket/blazer.

I think parsnipping (great term) is a real risk though if you've got hips/no waist/broad shoulders, especially if layering up top, so it's important to try to get the balance right (and then you can try something like a tunic I guess - someone linked to a lush one on Hush yesterday which looked v cool).
