Modifying men's band tshirts...

Surely there must be other rock chicks on there who like to wear band shirts but can rarely find them in a woman's cut?

I love to wear band shirts - it's just a big part of being a metalhead - but there are few options in a woman's cut. Especially when I'm buying a shirt at a gig and the band is pretty obscure. I will buy a men's medium, and wear them, but they make me look like I have the torso of a slightly lumpy adolescent boy. I can only imagine how much worse this problem is for the busty women.

I see a lot of women at gigs who have slashed their shirts, put laces in them, etc. I am not so very crafty and I was afraid to try this, myself. But, I found a tutorial online that looked easy:

www.instructables.com/id/easily-alter-a-crew-neck-t-shirt/

Basically, you use a dinner plate as a guide for cutting out the neck with a rotary cutter. Then, if you like, you cut the sleeves.

I went and bought a rotary cutter and a mat, and using my least-favourite band shirt for the first trial, I gave it a go.

I really like the results! I used a pretty big dinner plate and the result was something that sort of falls off one shoulder a little bit. I cut three inches off the sleeves and they look much better.

I have now cut almost all of my band shirts and I am excited to wear them because I can look pretty as well as brootal. ;)

Does anybody else modify their shirts? What do you do to yours?

I don't modify tshirts (massive boobs look ridiculous in them!), but I have seen MILLIONS of ways to do very cool things to tshirts on Pinterest. Loads of great ideas for making more feminine flattering shapes and loads of no sew ones too.

I tend to cut the neck areas into either v shapes or just cut the ribbing off and then cut the sleeves off entirely and have really oversized vest style tops

Great idea. I have been wondering how people do it for a long time. Thanks for that.

Interesting!

Often I customize t-shirts with paint, nail varnish, ribbon trim or lace.

dustyhousewithdustypeople · 23/09/2014 20:07

I was wondering exactly this today, thank you!

Thank u! That's gone on my Pinterest

I have pretty much zero sewing ability. I own a machine and it lives in my loft. I can sew on a button, is all.

So just cutting them is all I can do and I was afraid to do anything with just a pair of scissors. Even with the plate as a guide, it's easy to get a sort of hack - ey look on the neckline. But! I can trim the little jaggedy bits with nail scissors or just pinch them off if they're very small.

I just wear them oversized with the sleeves rolled up, but i'm small chested.

I used to cut them so they were a sort of slash neck, or sometimes turn them into crop tops.

Can't really get away with that look now though.

Try slashing across the sides and wearing over a vest top. Ive turned them into halter necks as well with some careful scissor work
