What shall I do with my hair?! (Pic attached, needs to be low-ish maintenance!)

I am getting the urge to dramatically cut and/or dye my hair after about 3 or 4 years of trying to grow it long and avoid dye...

DS was born 3 months ago and my hair has been falling out like mad and has gone a bit frizzier than it was before. If I let it dry naturally and scrunch it, it's curly, but I often brush the curls out to get rid of annoying knots and apply serum to de frizz...

What shall I do? So tempted to do something very drastic like cut it v. short and dye it blonde (Blondie style...) but maybe that's going a bit too far as I do like long hair... However my baby has just got to the painful hair-grabbing stage so it's tempting!

In the past when I've cut my hair short I've loved it but also I do start to become envious of every long haired beauty hat I see on the street.. It took about 4-6 years to get to this length. Anyway, enough yakking - advice anyone?!

I think you've got lovely hair! I would be reluctant to cut it all off personally.

In that picture, have you left it to dry naturally?

The colour could maybe do with a revamp. You have pale skin (like me) and I think maybe you could get away with going a little darker, but with a warm tone.

Oscarandelliesmum · 23/09/2014 11:58

Agree, it is lovely and bouncy and full! A warm toned colour re-vamp? Can you link to the Blondie style?

Sorry, just had to add.... How about going mahogany? I don't think you'd suit poker straight hair. Do you own a curling wand? You could rough dry and then give yourself a few curls. You don't have to do your whole hair. As long as the rest of your hair isn't too straight, hence the rough dry suggestion. Definitely keep the layers! They work with our face shape.

Embrace your curls or waves. I would go for a shoulder length cut, I think that way you'd get more of a springy curl as the weight and length of your hair will be dragging it down.

Also maybe some long layers and highlights around your face to give a bit of texture and some warmth.

Thank you for being brave enough to post a photo. I'm a chicken but am in a bit of a rut and have the same shaped face as you so am marking place. I wear mine long and straight and am growing my fringe out. But it's all a bit meh. Is your hair too curly for a fringe?

Flingmoo · 23/09/2014 12:20

Thanks for the compliments! Yes I let it dry naturally but the day after I brushed the curls out into waves because the curls start getting a bit tangly and uncomfortable on the second day. I don't even own straighteners, it takes forever and looks a bit naff straight.

Mahogany sounds nice, I've done similar, before, it's even been a vibrant, fiery red a few years in the past which DH loved. I used to be a hair dye addict... I've managed to avoid the bottle for a few years now but I keep feeling myself getting all lusty when I walk past the hair dye aisle at the supermarket... :D

I've had a fringe lots of times but I get fed up with it getting greasy way before the rest of my hair.

I'd go a wee bit shorter and encourage your curls. Your hair is lovely, don't get it all cut off. I cut all my hair off (after an incident with bleach-but that's another thread) and dyed it blonde but it was incredibly high maintenance. Your roots need to be touched up every 4-6 weeks, my hair was like cotton wool with the damage it had caused. I also had to pretty much wash my hair every day as I'd wake up with it doing all sorts of crazy stuff.

mrssnodge · 23/09/2014 16:37

I agree with the others, dont cut it off its lovely!- maybe a slight trim and colour but I think you would regret a cut- just clip it up, bun/ponytail to keep baby grabbing it- that length hair is so versatile and it looks in great condition, I do think a long fringe and a few highlights around the front may be flattering too. (You can always just wash the finge and dry it without having to do rest of hair) I grow my hair for a while, gets too long, get it cut and ALWAYS regret it and Im always growing it back!

Milllie · 23/09/2014 16:50

I was wondering about a fringe for you too and some caramel lowlights around the hairline fringe area. Maybe get a few inches off and then you could just stick it up in a loose sexy bun by day and let it down by night.Grin

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 23/09/2014 16:51

Fab hair - regular trims and possibly a dye to a lovely shiny brown. Very Kate Middleton natural wave.

Clarabumps · 23/09/2014 16:52

or use some dry shampoo on the fringe?

Millipedewithherfeetup · 23/09/2014 16:59

I would also suggest a mahogany dye( chocolate brownie by loreal I think), Is a lovely warm shades, go for semi permanent lasts for 20 or so wsshes.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 23/09/2014 17:43

I would layer a bit and embrace the curl. colour a bit warmer with a mahogany or red as already suggested, look into the curly girl method and voila, a true beauty even if you do end up tying it back until DC is older

Barbabelle · 23/09/2014 18:10

A long sweepy fringe would look amazing. I'd go for a few caramel highlights in the sweepy fringe and round your face - not in the length though because they might dry your hair out and it's so lovely and shiny atm.

AWombWithoutAFoof · 23/09/2014 18:18

I think you should cut off the bottom layer, if that makes sense, so the cut ends with the waves level with the v of your top on the photo.
