Is bare minerals like the emperor's new clothes?

Just put it on for the first time but can't see any difference. I swirled, I tapped and I circled as instructed.

Any advice?

Loads of people rave about it. The more you buff the better the coverage. Unfortunately I'm allergic to it, despite being told that no one is allergic to it.

I found you really need to circle for a good 5 minutes before I got coverage that looked anywhere near makeup.

I am in the minority though as the general consensus is that it is fabulous. I like the idea of it feeling more like skin than make up but unfortunately it just makes me all red and itchy.

kaykayblue · 23/09/2014 10:31

I personally hate it.

Ifyoubuildit · 23/09/2014 11:12

Oh don't say that, I've just spent a small fortune on it!

did you buff OP? How long did you swirl for? I think they try and sell it as a 'just sweep and go' type foundation but you need a lot of buffing with your full face brush. I love the eyeshadows and the primer is great. I just can't wear the foundation.

atticusclaw · 23/09/2014 11:45

Its useless. I went to a beauty salon a few weeks ago and had a treatment which involved me having a shower afterwards. Since I was in the city centre they then did my make up for me so that I didn't have to walk out completely bare faced. Despite the swirling and professional application it provided no coverage at all.

I was disappointed since I'd read the hype and was considering switching if it was any good.

MissMilbanke · 23/09/2014 12:37

No I like it. It looks really natural and I think thats kinds the point of foundation.

No orange glow or anything...

Fabulassie · 23/09/2014 12:41

I do like it. The regular powdered foundation no longer looks good on me - it did when I was thirty but now at 44 it looks dry on my cheeks. Their night treatment powder (I don't get it, either) actually looks very good on me. If I wanted to look flawless, yet like I wasn't wearing makeup, I would wear that. Their liquid is very good, but I do think it may highlight some lines around my eyes. That said, I think it's overall the best liquid foundation I've tried in a while. (Although I think I'll try out my No 7 again today to be sure.)

coffeenut · 23/09/2014 12:43

I am also allergic to it.

squoosh · 23/09/2014 12:50

I think it's shit and often wonder why it's so recommended on here.

Carpaccio · 23/09/2014 13:05

Friends and I have had unpleasant reactions (itchiness, deep, painful spots under the skin around the jaw) to bismuth oxychloride so I'm avoiding products with that in, including some of the Bare Minerals mineral foundations.

Costacoffeeplease · 23/09/2014 13:20

I don't like it either - so much faffing and powder everywhere - Laura geller balance n brighten is much better

Ifyoubuildit · 23/09/2014 13:48

Bugger!

OP posts:
Clarabumps · 23/09/2014 14:40

Carpaccio I thought it was the bismuth until I tried other mineral make up that was bismuth free and has the SAME reaction. Bugger. I think I must be allergic to mica or some other ingredient. Maybe its the application method.
I dunno- it doesn't like me though. Stupid minerals.

Clarabumps · 23/09/2014 14:41

You could try selling it on ebay?

Nightboattocairo · 23/09/2014 14:48

Sorry OP. I can't stand it either. Horrible oxidisation, really not very nice at all. I stick to my liquid foundation and a light loose powder. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

BunnyLebowski · 23/09/2014 14:48

I hate it too.

Horrible stuff. I have no idea why it's so lauded by some Confused .

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/09/2014 15:18

I've been wearing it on and off for years.

TipseyTorvey · 23/09/2014 15:22

Grin at Emperor's new clothes title. I tried it, didn't get on with it at all and have been thinking I'm missing some great revolution as everyone on makeup alley seems to think its amazing. It made me look odd and caked and made a huge mess of my make up area. I slunk back to liquid foundation and have stayed there.

Dawndonnaagain · 23/09/2014 15:32

It made me look as though I was wearing a mask. Very strange.
I use Mac Studio fix powder foundation. Love it.

MimiSunshine · 23/09/2014 15:34

I like it, but i switch between that and Mac mineralize foundation, mainly because the loose powder did get on my nerves sometimes. However the first time i tried it, i did literally have the same thought about Emperors New Clothes but i think that’s because it gives you a totally different look to liquid foundation which i now can’t bare.

You do need to perfect the buff in though, swirl all around in one direction and then all around again in the opposite direction, you can always add more, and they suggest you only need a tiny amount but it depends on what coverage you want.

I would really recommend their new version though that’s solid in a compact. I can honestly say it makes my skin look an air brushed version of me and lasts until i take it off before bed.
this one

You still need to buff it in but with a more standard buffing technique than with the loose powder. If you don’t want to buy their flat brush then boots do a cheaper one.

temporaryusername · 23/09/2014 17:08

What brush are you using OP? I find the Body shop biggest face/powder brush good with it, also their mineral make up brush is meant to be good.

Put quite a bit on the brush, evenly, but then tap well so not too much goes on the face. As you circle put a bit of pressure on and off towards the face, iyswim, buffing.

You might not end up repurchasing but don't give up yet. If you don't have a reaction to it, it can be a decent foundation. I certainly do notice a big difference after application.

XiCi · 23/09/2014 20:14

Hate it. Bought some after the rave reviews on here and thought it was awful. Aged me about 10 years. Sold it on ebay.

No idea why people go on about it. Mind you, have never heard anyone in RL recommend it, maybe bare minerals marketing team have infiltrated mumsnet Grin

SofaCanary · 23/09/2014 20:23

Hate the stuff, the metallic cast made me look like the fucking tin man.

BeyondTheSea · 23/09/2014 20:24

I like it, looks much more natural but you can get good coverage as well, just apply more!
I used mac studio fix before and it now feels really heavy/greasy on my skin.I much prefer BM.

temporaryusername · 23/09/2014 20:37

I am really surprised at the comments about BM on MN!

Another thread has recently persuaded me to try some different mineral foundations, and I'm not saying BM is the best or is for everyone. It is pretty good for many of us though, and I am certainly a real life person not a BM marketing person posing as a ordinary user!

My advice would be if trying it go for the basic original foundation, no mineral veil or all those extras. Buy first time from QVC (just first time as you can get it cheaper elsewhere usually) as you can use and return if it doesn't suit you.
