Skinny jeans on pears - when are they acceptable?

I am woeful in matters of fashion. I am a pear, always have been. My hips are about 33-34in and my boobs a pathetic 30C, I have a long body, long waist and short, short legs.

My standard outfit is darkish jeans (bootcut), worn with very old Cat-style boots and a thin jumper.

I look a mess, and I know this. The everyday jeans are baggy, and all the tops I own are hanging off me a bit as well since I lost the babyweight.

DP says I should wear skinny jeans. I keep telling him they make me look like a whale - he says 'but everyone wears them and they don't look bad'. Who's right? When are skinny jeans acceptable on a pear? Ever?

I'm a pear and I wear skinnies; cautiously. Mid calf boot is my best length, but I do wear them with ankle boots too. A bit of a heel always improves the look, as I have relatively short legs. I bought a pair in zara lately, with horizontal zips on the hip and I hope think the zips distract from the hips.

But I do think we exagerate our shapes in our heads. The reality is often less dramatic.

Next slim jeans or Gap Always Skinny are good as they're not as tight around the lower leg

Wear a long top, that finishes below your bum, and you'll be fine.

I've just bought a pair of black skinnies from NYDJ. Not cheap - and my first pair - but I thought if I was going to do it, I had to give it my best shot!

Also bought a colbalt blue long-ish jumper with buttons down the back to go with them, and was surprised at my new silhouette.

I also think that now that most people are wearing skinnies, you see all shapes and sizes in them, and you sort of get used to the view IYSWIM.

I'm a pear and wear slim/straight leg rather than skinny.

I agree with this. I think when you look at yourself in the mirror you concentrate on the bits you like least and don't look at your body as a whole, which exaggerates the bad bits.

At 34 inch hips you can't be all that pearshaped surely.

My hips are rather larger than that and I swear by Gap High Rise Skinny (as recommended by Sorrel above). The key is to get the appropriate tops/boots/shoes in your bag, and then try on loads and loads and loads of pairs until you a) get used to the idea b) find the ones that fit best.

Right so I just had a measure. Bust 32 (I'm very flat chested now prob a 30A, whole other thread!) waist 27 hips 35 but crucially, thighs/ass 38 inches.

Hence the pear shape!

I think the comment about everyone wearing them so the view is normalised is very on the money. Given that two-thirds of women are supposed to be pears, there must be some leeway!

I very much appreciate all of your help though. I do feel more open to the idea knowing I'm not automatically condemning myself to the crap heap by trying them on is at least encouraging :)
