If you're fairly tall and slim where do you shop? Help with sleeve lengths please

I'm in the process of replacing my entire wardrobe due to weight loss, I'm now size 8, occasionally a 10 and 5ft 9. Most high street stores seem to shorten sleeve lengths on the smaller sizes. Where does good long sleeves?! I've had some success with ME+EM and baukjen, jigsaw is hit and miss as is whistles. Any other recommendations? I'm after good basics and a parka coat, thankfully longer length bottoms are much more readily available! Thanks v much

I'm a bit taller than you and same dress size and was going to say Baukjen and me and em so unfortunately no revelations there! I've had some success with splendid jersey tops too. Also top shop tall has the odd nice top. Also find longish things in Zara though not sure I could say good quality. I'm wondering about a couple of things from hush after reading reviews to say their stuff only looks good on tall narrow people but currently only have (long length) pjs. They do some extra long length layering tops similar to the Baukjen ones but only £30 instead of £50 which I would like to try.

The shorter sleeves and body lengths in smaller sizes seems so unfair. I don't understand why clothes are cut like that.

My heavy parka is a barbour arctic one but do tend to need wrist warmers with it.

Sunmakesmesmile · 20/09/2014 19:44

Thanks, I'll have a look in topshop, I've got a couple of bits from Zara, but the quality isn't great as you say. I've been pleased with my hush pjs as the longer length is great, but I have just returned the basic layering t. I ordered it at the same time as the ME+EM bits and the quality IMO wasn't as good. I've been pleased with baukjen but they've started doing ruched tops which takes me back to my maternity days!

I might try the Barbour, I had the Aigle Cuckmere before which was perfect on terms of length and warmth but it's now 4 sizes too big so passed it on to my DM, i was hoping to find something else slightly less ££, but nothing I've tried compares yet.

I'm 5'9 and a 6-8. my down filled barbour is good length with long sleeves. have had success with l/s bretons from j crew. sweaty betty have good long trousers if you need yoga/run/lounging stuff!

Blondieminx · 20/09/2014 23:06

I'm 5"8 and an 8-10. Try DP Tall or Topshop Tall, Banana Republic (their jersey is ££ and prone to bobbling), Oasis, H&M and Phase Eight (these latter 2, the sleeve lengths are very variable so you'll need to do some trying on)

I have just invested in a Seasalt Janelle parka I got 10% off & free del using RED10PP - I am delighted with it, it's past my knees, sleeves are lovely and long and seems very well made.

SofaCanary · 20/09/2014 23:26

I've had some success with Uniqlo men's jumpers, the cashmere ones in particular are fab - they look much more expensive and luxurious than the meaner cut women's version.

rubybleu · 21/09/2014 10:47

I find COS quite good. I am slightly shorter than you (5'8") but have unusually long arms for my height Sad. I tend to stick to elbow length for layers but struggle for blazers and coats.

My heavy winter coat is a Canada Goose - it's my favourite thing ever. It was horribly expensive but the sleeves are so long that they finish at my fingertips! I basically bought it for that reason alone, it was such a novelty.

MehsMum · 21/09/2014 10:52

Oh, Blondie, I'd not heard of Topshop Tall. Do they do jeans? I have a fab cardy from the Phase Eight sale with really long sleeves (I have gibbon arms).

Long Tall Sally have been pretty good in the past; not sure what they're like now. It's also worth trying tops in Gap because sometimes their sleeves come up nice and long.

It's bloody expensive being tall! Great to look elegant n'all, if your bank balance can stand it!

velourvoyageur · 21/09/2014 11:37

I don't have a big budget but don't get stuff from New Look, H&M usually. Nothing wrong with them, just not my style. Does mean I can only buy very plain clothes that go with lots of things rather than many patterned/statement pieces. I shop a lot at Zara, get some bits from Topshop, American Apparel and Uniqlo jumpers.

catsofa · 21/09/2014 11:40

Next do a Tall range, but I find my long arms tend to be ok in their regular length sleeves. Also do some ebay searching, you can ask sellers to give the underarm measurement if you're not sure something will fit.

Youvegotthelove · 21/09/2014 17:31

Nothing helpful to add but I just wanted to say that I share your pain. I'm exactly the same height and size as you and I am sick of having cold wrists. Finding something with long enough sleeves is always such a novelty that I often end up buying it even if I don't actually like it that much if you see what I mean. I actually fantasise about owning basic jersey tops that are long enough in the arm and the body.

Blondieminx · 21/09/2014 18:22

They do indeed MehsMum see here - you need to click "refine" then "category" and select "tall jeans" Smile

Fabulassie · 21/09/2014 18:37

I bought a suit at Long Tall Sally (they have a bricks and mortar in Manchester city centre, but they also have a catalog. Don't know if there's a shop near you.)

I am 5'10" with a 34" inseam, so I was thrilled to know that all the trousers I wanted to try on would be long enough.

However, the sleeves were too long on the jacket - my height is in my legs, only, it seems. So, I just had them taken up.

Anyway, I would vouch for LTS to have long sleeves on their clothes. Their stuff is of a decent quality, although a fairly conservative style.

Hammerandnails · 21/09/2014 18:44

The following high street shops all have a tall section: Gap, Topshop, Next, New look.
JCrew have a tall section too, more expensive but worth it.
If your budget can stretch to it, shop designer. Lots of more expensive clothes seem to be longer. Weekend by Maxmara are generally long, including sleeve length. If you're savvy, shop in the designer sales and you won't feel as tall as most things will fit!!

MehsMum · 21/09/2014 19:39

Ooh, thanks, Blondie: will stick my head in our local TopShop and see if they have such things in stock!

Hammer, you have reminded me that Hobbes trousers are a decent length, and their sleeves likewise. They cost a bloody fortune, but they are well cut and very comfortable.

Sunmakesmesmile · 21/09/2014 19:45

Really useful replies thank you! Funnily enough I came across a lovely navy long sleeve top from Maxmara yesterday and the sleeves were perfect. It was a great fit but ££ for a basic top. But I'm a firm believer in quality not quantity these days so may order it. I've ordered a couple of tops from J Crew too. I've got the odd piece from gap talk but they don't do all the styles in XS annoyingly, and I'm reluctant to pay the online prices when the stores do better discounts!

I think I'm going to invest in some wrist warmers to fill the gap too. I'd love a Canada Goose parka but that would blow a lot of my budget and I still need shoes etc . I had no problems on the summer with this new wardrobe but A/W is much harder first world problem I know

OP posts:
Hammerandnails · 21/09/2014 19:48

If you can afford to invest in a few good quality pieces, it's worth it as they last so much longer. I think LTS is very expensive for rubbish quality.

Hammerandnails · 21/09/2014 19:53

Sorry sun, cross posts. I do gulp at maxmara weekend prices but I have knitwear that I still wear and looks great 3 years after a purchased it. It's probably 3 times the price of Next stuff but I find their knitwear loses shape and bobbles quickly and I end up wearing it only a few times. Sales are your friend Wink. Ps a good coat is always worth investing in, they cover a multitude of sins!

Blondieminx · 21/09/2014 20:39

MehsMum umm you may go home empty handed as most branches carry one gondola of Tall range, if that! You're best to order online!

SarcyMare · 21/09/2014 20:42

Has anyone said the internet shop tall girls, they are a bit younger than my other standard long tall sally.

fadingfast · 21/09/2014 21:31

It may not meet your quality criteria, but for casual wear I've often found Esprit tops to be reasonably generous in the sleeves (I'm 5 10" but a 14).
