cutting it all off

i need some moral support... have shoulder length wavy, on a good day curly hair which is very thick wiry and mostly out of control and want to have it all cropped off to a style I had 6 years ago.

some moments I think yeah, I'm brave gonna do it, need a drastic style change, then the next minute think no, keep the curls.
I am nearly 42 but a size 10 and like to think still a bit younger looking than 42...
what shall I do?

IMO - and this is a generalisation, but I think women always look older when they have their long hair cut short (as long as their long hair was pretty stylish anyway).

Depends if you have round shoulders. Can't stand short hair and round shoulders - really aging.

binker · 25/09/2006 17:34

bagpussmice - that sounds a great cut - I'm toying with having a much shorter bob - might wander into hairdressers tomorrow to book - had it cut a few weeks ago but have an urge for short'n'sassy !! (am 48 and don't want to look older, but my hair is v fine and drives me mad)

bagpussmice · 25/09/2006 17:41

what do you mean by round shoulders, not sure I understand, do you mean hunched over like an old woman?

I always thought having your hair cut shorter made you look younger

Bad posture. Shoulders forward instead of held back. Top of back slightly bent forward, rounded. Sort of like an old woman, but some people seem to always have been like that.

I am not the person to advise about short hair though, I just don't like it very much, though i must admit Kylie looks lovely.

Hi Sorry been a bit busy!!!

Had hair down to just past shoulders - all one length and was sick of looking like Morticia - only grew it for wedding - have a Natalie Umbruglia/Erin whats her name from the M&S adds cuts now.

just had it cropped, very short. bit of a shock each time I pass a mirror, but feel liberated and think it does make me look a bit younger
(dd2 stared at me for ages and wouldn't speak to me for about an hour when I picked her up from nursery)..

I had my hair cropped short about 8 years ago now after splitting up with a boyfriend and feeling the need for a change of image! At the time I had it cut into a Gwyneth Paltrow "Sliding Doors" style. After the initial shock of having such short hair, I've never looked back.

It's still almost as short but less 'structured' now - longer layers on the top and fring, and the ends at the back and sides kind of flick outwards (I have ultra-fine, straight hair so rely heavily on highlights and styling products to give it 'oomph').

I had my hair in a one-length bob from the ages of about 16-27 and when I look back at photos I wish I'd had it cut short much earlier. I'm very petite and have good bone structure and small features (biggish eyes though) and it suits my face and overall size much better to have short hair. DH thinks I looked very 'suburban housewife' with the bob! I had a rubbish hairdresser at the time and have to admit it did look rather mumsy.
