Hair cut help

I've always had long ish(past shoulder length) hair. I want a change now though. I'm in my thirties and I feel like it's time I did something different. But I've always worn my hair tied back and quote frankly I'm scared!

My hair is coarse and incredibly thick. It's often described as the thickest hair the hairdresser has seen in a while, so I know it is unusually thick. I've also got a big head. I'd like my hair short bob length but I'm worried about making my head seem bigger or my hair being more out of control without the weight to pull it down.

Argh id love easy to manage hair that I could just do in ten minutes, especially now I've got a newborn baby. I think I'm going to have to find a good hairdresser and just have a chat with them.

From my experience with exactly the same sort of hair you should avoid a short bob like the plagueGrin

It's a difficult, hard to manage style at the best of times but with thick coarse hair it's even harder.

If you find drying a problem as it's so thick then invest in a parlux drier, it not only dries my hair in ten mins instead of 20+ but it smooths it too so looks sleek. Also Loreal extra ordinary oil is amazing too.

I'm 43 and for the first time ever I feel like my hair is under control!

Allinson2014 · 18/09/2014 14:40

Noooo, I was hoping a bob would help Sad. I just can't do anything with it at all. I just want to be able to leave my hair down.

I will definitely look into that drier as mine takes ages, thanks.

whatabout going cropped?

Catswiththumbs · 18/09/2014 15:15

A pixie crop takes a lot of maintenance and styling- you will have to wash it most (if not everyday) to get rid of sticky up/out tufts. Hairdresser every 4 weeks. And that's if you have a hairdresser who understands your hair. Mine is fairly thick and has a tendency to "bush" out and make my head look like a mushroom if it isn't cut with the way it grows in mind.

Layers will take weight out of your hair.

How about a Brazilian blow dry to make it smooth and more manageable?

TongueBiter · 18/09/2014 15:22

Thick hair here too - I had a bob then recently went short, and love it. Quick wash in the shower every day, 3-4 mins drying time. More frequent haircuts to keep on top of it but not excessively so.

Allinson2014 · 18/09/2014 16:29

I was thinking about a Brazilian blow dry. Would anyone recommend/avoid them?

Try the oil and also Tigi blow out balm is amazing.

It sounds like you need a fantastic cut tbh by someone who really understands your hair.

Allinson2014 · 18/09/2014 17:49

I do. I just don't know how to find that person.

I couldn't be doing with the faff and would pixie. It takes seconds to wash and dry and is stress free. If you have got a big head it will work well.

What are your features like?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/09/2014 20:10

Google 5 star salons in your area OP, they will work to a certain standard.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/09/2014 20:11

Pixie won't work with coarse hair though.

Milmingebag · 18/09/2014 20:32

A pixie will work on coarse hair if it is texturised.

minkah · 18/09/2014 20:36

I have seen people who've had Brazilian hair done and they look like they're carrying a horses tail around attached to their head.

Incredibly lack lustre affect on the hair.

WowWowSauce · 18/09/2014 21:59

Audrey Tatou has hair like I think you're describing, and rocked the bob and the pixie cuts I've seen her with. if you search interest for thick hair pixie or bob there are lots of others too (Mine is also pretty thick, and while I don't like bobs, I do have a pixie just now and it definitely suits me better than long hair did. I go to a really untrendy hairdresser who likes to tell me he's been cutting hair longer than I've been alive (37!!) and charges £14 per cut.

So it can be done. Good luck finding another like him though - if you're anywhere near Edinburgh I can give you his details.
