Are all jeans denim?

I feel a bit stupid writing this...

I've ordered some jeans from new look, collected today and they fit (yay!) but the material they're made of is quite thin cotton, not denim at all.

I have always thought that jeans = denim - is this not right? If not, what do I need to look out for if shopping online to make sure I'm buying denim jeans?

Or if anyone can point me in the direction of some black jeans, wide leg/bootcut, not low rise, size 18-20 - I'd really appreciate it!

Not all jeans are denim.

Even denim jeans makers like Levis make jeans in other materials like cordoroy.

There are also moleskin/velvet styles. I think jeans or 'a Jean' in fashion parlance (wtf?) tends to mean a five pocket western style with a zipped front. However, other styles are available.

DD1 has some Top Shop 'jeans' like that.

They are jean style and look like arty bleached denim, but they are much thinner softer cotton.

She loves them, exactly because they are so soft (she doesn't like jeans), but I'm certain they won't last like real denim.

Thanks all. I will look for the word "denim" in future Smile

I thought jeans should be denim.
