It's a session where they figure out which colours or colour palette suit you best.

Chottie · 12/09/2014 07:09

I had CMB over 20 years ago. It was a 1-1 session with a consultant. She laid plain colour swatches of different colour shades of fabrics around my neck to determine what colour family I belonged too. It was spot on.

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/09/2014 08:55

You can buy a set on swatches online to see which group suits you.

kaykayblue · 12/09/2014 10:00

As others have said above, it is basically a paid service where you meet with someone, and they have a massive "swatch" book of fabrics in a huge range of colours. It's a bit like those carpet swatches you can get, but way bigger, and with cotton or silk as the fabric.

They then drape each colour over your neck, so it looks a bit like a bib.

The aim is to discover which colours suit you the most, and which look fucking hideous on you. Sometimes they will give you a mini swatch book of your colours afterwards to help remind you when out shopping.

Again, some consultants will try and pigeon hole you into a certain "season" (winter, spring, summer, autumn), depending on which colours suit you the most. Some people are in between seasons of course.

You can watch demonstrations of people getting it done on youtube.

You can also find advice online and do it yourself.

The basics include:
white or cream ( next to your face)
khaki or blue-green
pink or peach

Try material in these colours next to your face - no make up and natural light.
One colour should flatter and 'lift' your complexion the other will make it look dull, older and show up shadows under eyes.

Basically, white, pink and blue-green = cool palette and the others a warm palette. There are then sub-groups within these two groups.

I'm cool and look dreadful in mustard yellow,, khaki, brown, orange and beige.

tethersend · 12/09/2014 12:27

Some of us are devotees of it and say it's completely life-changing.

Some of us think it's a load of old bollocks.

I won't say which camp I'm in.

kaykayblue · 12/09/2014 12:30

pinkfrocks - I've not seen anyone break it down like that before. If that's the case then I am warm without a doubt. Khaki makes me look like a corpse. Pink makes me look like a cake.

Which weird as I'm so pale I always assumed I would be "cool" coloured.

pinkfrocks · 12/09/2014 12:39

Kay have I made a mistake?
I am cool and suit pink, white and green-blues. Warm tones are khaki, brown, oranges.

If you are pale and suit pink then you are correct- you are cool.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 12/09/2014 13:49

But there are warm and cool pinks - and I am definitely warm toned and blue-green is one of my best colours. It has yellow in it, so how can it be cool?

I'm no expert, I just think it's really, really hard to work it out yourself unless you're good at seeing the difference. I am not, but I could see it in the consultant's room (!) so I go with it Grin

AdoraBell · 12/09/2014 13:59

I have a DD who can wear just about any colour as long as it's a strong shade.

So what does that mean thenConfused

pinkfrocks · 12/09/2014 16:06

Blair yes there are sugar almond or 'baby' pinks, and salmon pinks. ( more yellow in them)

Blue green belongs to the turquoise group.

I've a book Colour Me Confident which shows the swatches really well.

Moss green for example is a very yellowy green, but teal- not blue, not green- is completely different.

I look good in Baby Pink but terrible in salmon pink.

sunflower49 · 12/09/2014 16:38

I have had them done and remember being told I am a 'warm', but cannot remember what colours that means I should wear!

WineWineWine · 12/09/2014 16:48

I had it done years ago. All very interesting but a complete waste of time to be honest.
It's not about what colour you can wear, it's about which shade of each colour you can wear and there are millions of different shades, so when you are shopping, shades vary too much to be useful.
I'm glad it was free because I would have resented paying any money for it!

QueenCardigan · 12/09/2014 17:40

tethers sums it up but I suspect that I'm in the opposite camp to her Grin
