Ok both myself and dd (4) have got really bad dry scalps. Dd's is worse then mine.

We're both now at the end of our tether. Tried anti dandruff shampoos, tea tree oil. Doctors is next step but until we can get an appointment we need some an ideas.

Someone mentioned olive oil, this is all well and good, but how the hell do I do that without smelling like I need some tomatoes and mozzarella salad to with it.

Ta all

have you checked your diet?

Angels and horns kids range is very good as it doesn't have all the bad chemicals in it. My son has one patch on his head that flares occasionally and I do use veg/olive oil. I rub in a night and use and old pillow as it will stain. Then wash out in the morning. It sometimes needs to shampoos. Not sure how effective this would be on longer hair though and getting the oil out would be more of a challenge.
There was a thread out there I read a few weeks back talking about different hair shampoos and alternatives.

Yeah. It's well balanced and I'm eating well for the first time in years

Tea tree oil is probably not a good idea as it's very harsh, it could be aggravating it further.

Coconut oil or almond oil

wooly31 · 11/09/2014 12:22

Just a quick thing- you probably already know this but dandruff and dry scalp are different things and using e.g. head and shoulders on dry scalp can make it worse. www.naturalhairrules.com/winter-hair-tips-dealing-with-dry-scalp-and-dandruff/

There must be better links out there but dry scalp needs light oils and dandruff try coal tar/salicylate treatments.

Have you thought of visiting a tricologist- there is a list of registered ones www.trichologists.org.uk

mrscumberbatch · 11/09/2014 12:31

Go to the doctors. Maybe it isn't dandruff and you have psoriasis of the scalp (very common.)

In the meantime, coconut oil, almond oil- anything that you can moisturise with and not irritate your skin.

No hard rubbing or vigorous combing. The tougher you are the worse it will get.

mrscumberbatch · 11/09/2014 12:31

Rougher rather than tougher!

hufflebottom · 11/09/2014 14:21

Could be. Cheers guys. Just booked an appointment with doc for me and dd.

supplement with fish oils, max does until it clears up then try reducing a bit - should sort it.

Philip Kingsley Dry Scalp shampoo is one of the only things that works for DH who has a dry scalp/ eczema. It's not cheap but lasts ages.

If you scalp is red and itchy too then it may be eczema- treatment is liquid ( lotion) mild steroid such as Betnovate lotion.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/09/2014 15:36

Try Loreal elvive men's anti dandruff shampoo with selenium, black bottle with orange lid. It's the revamped blue one that was discontinued that everyone used to rave about on here.

Body shop ginger shampoo is good tooSmile

houdini64 · 12/09/2014 16:56

Yes, I agree about the Body Shop shampoo. Also trying one with no sulphites at the mo. It's quite soothing.
