Eye make up: how do you do the eye flick?

I never get it right, how do you do it?

There's quite a good tutorial on this site.

I use the Body Shop liquid eyeliner which has almost like a felt tip applicator but that you dip into ink so it's somewhere between the ink/brush ones and the pen ones, neither of which I've ever got on with. Been doing the eye flick for nearly twenty years now, so I'm not sure I can explain how I do it but just keep practicing.

Can't beat a flicky eye! I've used Sali Hughes method and it's been pretty successful for me. There's a fair bit of waffle so fast forward to half way through.

squoosh · 09/09/2014 14:27

Basically she advises using a pencil to give a guide line and then go over it with liquid eye liner, the liquid eyeliner grips to the pencil and is less likely to go awry.

Comito · 09/09/2014 14:34

I tried the Sali Hughes method and found it a bit of a faff.

In the end I got a wet/dry black eyeshadow and an eyeliner brush, then drew a line up from the corner of my eye (angle & length depending on preference), then drew another line to meet it in a triangle from the top of my eyelid, coloured the triangle and finally blocked in colour over my eyelid in a graduating arc, IYSWIM. Takes a bit of practice to get it steady but it's fine now.

Oh, and don't bother with those eye makeup remover corrector pens, they are useless.

Oh Oyster much as I don't want to like Alexa Chung, in that video she is SO cool and those eyes

Comito · 09/09/2014 14:51

I just looked at that Alexa Chung video and realised I've inadvertently made my eyeliner like hers.

Eauneau · 09/09/2014 14:55

Lisa Eldridge (my make up guru these days!) does a good tutorial, its similar to what comito said I think with the triangle?

Eauneau · 09/09/2014 14:57

Oh just realised that the Alexa Chung one is Lisa Eldridge as well!

Rosarosae · 09/09/2014 16:56

Brilliant, thank you! Will check the tutorials and practise.

Try the spoon Method. Worked a treat for me x

Rosarosae · 09/09/2014 21:30

Spoon method? It sounds fun, Beare, what is it?

My goodness, I've just watched the Alexa Chung clip - she's gorgeous! She looks amazing without any make up at all. Unlike me.

And I've also googled the spoon method - what a brilliant idea! I will certainly try it tomorrow and report. Thanks you all Thanks

I'm going to try that Sali Hughes method with the dot tomorrow!

However, I worry that the stuff will creep into the crow's feet. I will try Benefit's Stay Don't Stray primer stuff to see if that helps.

Rosarosae · 09/09/2014 23:00

I love the look, but I still can't get it tight. Could it be that the look only suits young women? I'm in my early 40s and my lids are a bit droopy, something the flick seems to accentuate - unless I'm not doing it properly?

What's the spoon method?

Been trying for years to get this right!!

I like this....

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2014 04:33

I used to use a load of black eyeliner in my 20s but gave it up in my 30s as a) I tend towards dark under eye shadows and black eyeliner gravitating down didn't help b) I think that a lot of strongly coloured make up is quite ageing in itself past a certain point, certainly I think it would be for me. Looking at Strictly I think that a lot of the older celebs look much better/ younger without all the slap they pile on them. There is also the cliche of the older woman still trying to wear the make up of their youth; and heavy makeup can imply that there might be something to be hidden underneath.

Having said that, I do think eye flicks look lovely!
