What cover-up would go with my wedding dress?

I'm getting married next October. The wedding venue is surrounded by woodland and with it being autumn I imagine I'm going to get a little chily later on and need a cover up - some kind of pashmina or piano shawl perhaps? Maybe even a bolero.

Trouble is, I've searched high and low and can't find anything that even remotely goes with my dress. It's not from a traditional bridal shop, it's a one-off made from vintage filet lace.

Should I try and find a filet lace cover-up or would that be a lace overload?

I've no clue what kind of veil would go with the dress either. Any ideas??!

(I'm a 35, size 14, 5ft 5, busty, pale skin, long dark brown hair if that helps)

Those are also lovely. Should have known Wink

Hows about you put them in when you swap the veil for the shawl? Less is often more. Green piano shawl, shade is probably wrong

What about this, or is it still too patterned to go with the dress?

Or this in ivory (shade 102)

The flowers are lovely, I definitely prefer the slightly more folky look to a formal bridal one and think they would go really well with that dress.

I think a plain wrap is needed, maybe a contrasting colour to tone with the shoes and flowers/foliage, but not lace, or fringes or anything that would detract from the loveliness of the lace. I didn't say BTW, but I absolutely love the dress.

MrsLettuce · 09/09/2014 16:28

Yeah, realistically speaking they both have way too much going on. Grr.

BUT, that green one is so utterly lovely that I'd be sorely tempted to put all ideas of clashing patterns to the back of my head. I must have clicked back and forth between your dress and the shawl about 10 times but there really are no straight lines in the lace of the dress at all. Or are there? Seeing as it's made to order anyway you could ask her to make you one that had the beaded edging with the rest plain (without the trapeziums above the edging, as it were) that'd work with the dress. Definitely.

TBH one of the only advantages (IMHO) of yer-standard-plain-satin-bridal-dress is that they can take those sort of beautifully intricate shawls.

heartshapedflux · 09/09/2014 16:35

The folky look is deifnitely the one most suited to my tastes.

That's a very good point, there are no straight lines on my dress - I wouldn't have even thought of that!

The second shawl is beautiful, isn't it? I think plain with beaded edging might work well.

Is the dress beaded or just lace? A lacy shawl might snag on beads.

MrsLettuce · 09/09/2014 17:03

It's stunning and probably something you could get a lot of wear out of over the years. That sort of thing never dates.

TBH, if I were you I'd be contacting the maker/seller with photos of your dress to see if she'd be prepared to come up with something based on her original design but with more plain area and curves instead of straight lines in the edging. Worst she can say is ODFOD.

heartshapedflux · 09/09/2014 17:28

There's no beading on the dress.

Very good idea about asking the maker of my dress to come up with something. Had to look up what ODFOD meant!Grin

Oh I see what you mean, asking the maker of the shawls, not the dress - that's a good idea too!!

Oh a good idea indeed! Meant the maker of the linen shawl but getting the person who made the dress to make something would be much better, had no idea that was an option.

Good point about the beading. You would indeed need to be sure that the beads used would be bigger than the 'holes' in the lace - I've no idea what size that is though. 'Big' beads would 'orrid.

I still think velvet would work really well.

So...for a cover up, I've just purchased this on ebay:

Can you believe the original retail price of it?? I think I've got a bargain.

I went with the advice to choose something plain that wouldn't overwhelm the dress. However I think the tassels complement the tie on the side of my dress too (in pic)

There's a good chance you won't be cold, I'm a cold person who got married in a strapless dress in a 12th century church with non existent heating.

My guests all kept their coats on but I didn't feel a thing. You'll be on a high all day and it will keep you warm.

MrsLettuce · 11/09/2014 21:20

looks perfectGrin Lovey to see the detail shot of the dress too!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 11/09/2014 22:06

Bloody hell, the retail price of that! That is a bargain. And I think it's perfect too, the short fringe finishes it nicely, I think long ones can get a bit tangly and untidy.

Your dress is beautiful & the feather bolero above is lovely.i had this www.coast-stores.com/theresa-pearl-wrap/scarves-&-wraps/coast/fcp-product/10706 for my February wedding as I wasn't sure if I would need an extra something over my dress.its v reasonable too!!
