Please help me with DD's curly hair!

DD is 2.4 & has longish curly hair (type 2b, ie wavy on top & loose curls at the end). I've got straight hair so I've no idea what I'm doing... So far we've been managing with regular baby shampoo & a baby leave-in conditioner, which I comb through in the bath. I also put some hair oil on while her hair is still wet & use my fingers to distribute it. Use a brush when it's dry & it's now long enough to plait so I'm going to do that for nursery & bed.

I've seen stuff about wide tooth combs - how do you get all the tangles out? Is there any hairbrush that's good for curly hair but also detangling? Should I be looking at different products, a different brush, something else?

I've got the same type of hair and this brush is brill:

My DD1 has curly hair still fairly short despite her being 4.
tangle teezer brushes are little magical wonders that seem to glide through knots. I'm fairly sure that the rule with curly hair is only brush when wet. We wash at night so in the morning I spray with a de tangling spray and then brush it.

RubyGoat · 07/09/2014 21:07

Thanks, they look good & not too expensive. Will look at detangling spray as well.

Fill an empty spray bottle with a water/conditioner mix and spray her head each morning and comb through. As it then starts to dry, give it a little scrunch all round.

Dont brush it when dry as it will probably fizz up. Use the spray bottle for all styling.

Get yourself to an Afro-Caribbean hair shop. They will have lots of products to help you. I have naturally curly hair too and I get mine from there x

I started using herbal essences bee strong after a recommendation on mn and it's made a massive difference. I only use the shampoo once or twice a week and the rest of the time just wet it and comb through with a bit of conditioner

lucysmam · 07/09/2014 23:04

Don't wash too often.

I do dd2's every couple of weeks. That's it! The rest of the time I use a teeny splodge of conditioner & comb through with a wide toothed comb in the shower before rinsing.

Spray with water in a morning & rake fingers through before putting up for school Smile

Don't brush it when it's dry, it'll just frizz and fluff.

Wash it rarely - I do mine every week or 2.

Spray through with water/conditioner and comb with a wide tooth comb every day. Or so.

Mostly leave it alone.

Do not ever expect it to lie flat and neat (I'm looking at you DMother).

lucysmam · 08/09/2014 08:24

Grin at "flat and neat".

My curly wurly had a haircut Saturday (just a trim)...you can't tell...she still looks like a frizz ball.

Does conditioner in water help? I might try it rather than plain water.

repeat - never brush curly hair. Wide toothed comb when wet, with detangling spray. Leave to dry naturally if at all possible.

and plaits at night are essential. As well as very cute. :-)

lucysmam · 08/09/2014 10:42

God yes, plaits at night make my life so much easier on a morning. I used to just do ponytails until someone on here said plait instead.

satintaupe · 08/09/2014 10:46

I agree with the recommendation for Denman brushes but I use the Denman D31 freeflow styling hairbrush now as the bristles are further apart and it's easier to get through hair (I have ringletty curls). I only ever brush my hair when it's wet and loaded with conditioner. Wide toothed combs will not go through my hair easily. I apply a curl cream and leave to dry naturally.

The tangle teaser is great as well.

Use it upside down when hair is wet.

Towel dry as much as possible.
Make up a squirt bottle with half and half 'gel/ leave in conditioner' and 'water' throughout hair, scrunch and stand up.

Leave hair to dry naturally if possible, or diffuser on low power, so curls aren't blown out.

Squirt with mixture through the week as required. Or use essential oils. Drop a few drops onto palm, and scrunch in.

Put hair up into a loose twist with clip on top of head at night if plaits just straighten out hair and lopside all the volume.
