Winter coat - Merrell or Ilse Jacobsen

Sorry, the zillionth winter coat thread... I need something smart enough for going to work meetings but warm (I'm cold even in the summer, but I'm chronically allergic to down so have to go fleecey) and will keep me dry. I also need it for trips to the park, etc, so has to be functional. Merrell I like or Ilse I like. Any reviews gratefully received! I'm 5ft2 and about a size 10.

I don't know the Ilse, but I have a Merrell Haven. It's 3 or 4 years old now and looks good as new. It's also definitely the warmest coat I've ever owned! I only wear it when it's really cold, and have worn it to work and meetings on cold days - perfectly smart enough IMO.
I think its a great buy. Look around for offers - I'm sure I got mine for close to £100.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 05/09/2014 22:40

Thanks Soprendo, great to know it has lasted so long for you. Do you use the magic waterproofing detergent I've heard of?

The Merrell went up by £60 between putting it in my basket on Amazon last week and tonight Hmm. DH got some vouchers from work today though that I might liberate...

I have the Ilse Jacobsen one in a slightly shorter length from a couple of years ago, I really like it - it's warm (though not massively so, you'd need a good jumper under it if it was very cold), lasts well (mine is still perfect), looks nice, and really, properly waterproof - taped seams, waterproof zips etc. The hood isn't perfect in terms of stay-uppability while not being tightened right over your eyes, though I have that issue with a lot of raincoats - Patagonia used to get it really right and now aren't quite as good.

leedy · 05/09/2014 22:51

Actually if you're about 5'2'' I'd look for the Ilse one in the mid-thigh length - I'm 5'7'' and the full length I tried was actually quite long on me.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 05/09/2014 23:39

Thanks Leedy. Hmm, if you have to have a jumper on underneath, I think that's the Ilse one off the list. I tend to be absolutely freezing in winter, so I'll be like the Michelin man if I have to add a layer before my coat!

there are cheaper places than amazon to buy a merrell. outdoorlook.co.uk for one

PacificDogwood · 05/09/2014 23:43

Aigle Cuckmere, that's what you want
Well, what I want. Sigh. Too expensive.

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 05/09/2014 23:52

Pacific, unfortunately the down would make my eyes fall out and/or head explode.

Fossil, thanks for the link, but Amazon is the only place I can find colours other than grey and black. Hoping it might come down again before I buy, or that I'll be able to find it elsewhere. I'll keep looking!

I have the slightly shorter Ilse one too. I think it's much nicer than the longer one and a very useful length / flattering. It's fabulous, well worth the money, lasted well. A lot of people ask me about it (because they like it!).

PacificDogwood · 06/09/2014 09:59

Ah, I see, allergy considerations did not enter recommendation.
I would not want to be responsible for anybody's head exploding, no siree.

How about this one?

florascotia · 06/09/2014 10:52

Would any of these be suitable?

Also, if you don't mind buying from the USA*, this comes in lots of colours:
www.llbean.com/llb/shop/70409?feat=610-CL1&page=winter-warmer-coat

All these might be possible, too, though less warm than the one above:
www.llbean.com/llb/shop/82606?feat=610-CL1&page=h2off-raincoat-primaloft-lined
or www.llbean.com/llb/shop/83335?feat=610-CL1&page=highloft-soft-shell-coat
orwww.llbean.com/llb/shop/83434?feat=83335-ppxs&dds=y

*(You have to pay international postage, and you'll probably be asked to pay customs charges (roughly equivalent to VAT) but because of pound/dollar ratio, it's not too bad ...
You can estimate customs duty here:

MilkThistle187 · 06/09/2014 11:01

I have the Ilse one, but it is definitely an autumn/spring coat for me, would not be warm enough for winter.

F0ssil · 06/09/2014 22:03

How do you order a coat from America ??

Kundry · 07/09/2014 10:13

I have a Merrell and it's fabulously warm and lovely.

florascotia · 07/09/2014 10:40

On websites like the LLBean one mentioned above, that routinely deal with international orders, just fill in your address and debit/credit card details exactly as normal - they will ask what country you are ordering from. Many sites also take PayPal. You'll usually be offered a choice of different classes of international postage: very fast, standard, etc
When it comes to UK customs duties, with some sites you'll get an email or a card in the post, usually quoting your order number or details of your order, telling you how much to pay the Post Office, who will be collecting the duty on behalf of the UK government. You pay, usually over the phone or online. Then your package will be delivered.

Sometimes the email or card will be from one of the 'big name' international courier companies, who are collecting customs duties and doing the delivery instead of the Post Office.

On other sites (for example, this happened when I purchased something from the Metropolitan Museum of Art shop in the USA not long ago), the tax and postage are collected by the seller. You just pay one total sum, tax and postage included, and your parcel arrives, usually by courier.

Most sites will say whether or not they accept international orders, if not up front then in the 'delivery' or 'customer services' section of their website.
I'm sure you know that American sizes of clothes and footwear are not the same as UK or EU ones. So it's a good idea to check the measurements for each overseas company's products. All the websites have size information; it's usually easy to find.

Ilovenicesoap · 07/09/2014 14:06

I have Merrel Wakefield from about 4-5 years ago.
Its toasty warm but light, has a hood which stops the wind whistling around your ears .ie its nice and fitted rather than a big floppy useless hood.
It looks like new and has washed beautifully.

Not sure they still make that style but others look similar.
Worth every penny

nothruroad · 07/09/2014 14:15

I have a Merrel Haven and it's so warm that it's like wearing a duvet. I'm not a particularly cold person so I can only wear it in winter, it's far too warm for spring and autumn. This will be the 4th winter I've had it. I wash it with a waterproof protective detergent I got in an outdoor shop. I haven't needed to re-proof it yet. I would definitely recommend this coat, I love mine.

F0ssil · 07/09/2014 22:57

Thanks, I might try that, if I@m feeling brave!

Like OP i'm 5'2 and size ten although my chest is like 32" my hips are a size ten, i have the merrell ellenwood in size small or P (can't remember) adn it fits well. I see they do it in olive on the go outdoors website. I'd have preferred it in olive if i'd seen that last year. oh well!

F0ssil · 07/09/2014 23:05

i see they will ship it to me but for 35 dollars. could still be worth it if you see a coat you like.

thistooshallpasswontit · 07/09/2014 23:09

I have that Merrell (same colour you linked to) and I love it-so cosy and it is completely waterproof. Mine is in it's 3rd year and still going strong

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 09/09/2014 21:04

Hi all, thanks for your thoughts and suggestions, I've been away for a few days so only getting to reply now. I'm going to go with the Merrell. I'm playing price roulette on Amazon, it's down £40 on last week, and DH got £80 in Amazon vouchers that I'm going to appropriate! Really looking forward to a snuggly winter.
