Questions about hair dye at home.

I've never done this before and I'm scared!

I've half a head of blond highlights which were done 7 weeks ago, so about an inch growth. My hair is dark blond naturally, some of the highlights are very light.
I've just read the instructions and it says if you've coloured your hair in the last three months to do the roots and then wait a bit and then do the rest.

I really want to tone down the bright bit at the front, so I'm thinking maybe I should just do it all in one go, also if I go over some of the bright bit when doing my roots won't I end up with patchy bits?

It's a blond semi perm colour, loreal creme

I'm so worried I'm going to muck this up. :/

After a bad home dying incident when I was in my teens I never did it again and always went to the hairdresser. I ended up with bright orange hair for about a week before finally going blonde was a vile sight Blush personally I wouldn't risk it again

I agree with Jade - if you can afford it I'd stick with the hairdressers, as home dye kits never deliver quite what they promise imo.

MohammedLover · 06/09/2014 07:45

If you are one colour all over but just with roots I think home kits are fine. Not really sure about highlighted bits they may just get covered totally. What about a toners and shades type wash in sachet instead?

Catswiththumbs · 06/09/2014 08:00

If the front is looking bright brassy you need a toner. Try provoke touch of silver. It's a purple shampoo and will add ash tones to your highlights.
Leave it on for 3 minutes then rinse.

Don't leave it on too long otherwise you will end up purple.
Cheap and can't really mess it up!

Milmingebag · 06/09/2014 14:30

What shade are you going to use exactly? If it is ash then stop because in all probability it will turn green. With a semi I would just go over the lot as you shouldn't get root glow from the weak peroxide in them. It will wash out and fade considerably too.

I have dyed my hair at home since I was 19 and started to go grey.
I'm 43 now and have never had an allergic reaction or had any disasters. I put the dye on and then after the allotted 30 mins get in the shower and wash it off then condition it. This ensures all mess in confined to the shower and washes away straightaway. The number of people who dye their hair but moan about the mess and drips ruining their bathroom who haven't thought to have a shower amaze me Grin

Hi All,

Thanks for the help. durhamdurham'i hadn't read what you said about the shower! but that was exactly what I did, so no mess.

I did it all over, it was a honey blond colour. I am so pleased with it, wish I'd done it ages ago now.
