Need advice for earrings for 18 yr old

Its dp's sister's 18th birthday.

We want to buy her some earrings in either white gold/silver, suitable for going out in (i.e. drop ones or similar).

I'm having problems deciding what type of thing to get.

I want something that won't date much as 18th present that we'd like her to be able to use fo years and years.

Budget up to about £150. Any ideas?

Hot diamonds do some lovely stuff, usually around £70 - £100? I'm sure some of th designers such as armarni and hugo boss do a jewellery range for people like ernest jones, they are usually really nice, have the "designer appeal" and are timeless... the ernest jones website is good?

MrsBadger · 22/09/2006 11:33

hmm - the best earrings I was ever given were studs with (ahem) zirconias between two white gold bars - bit like these . They're subtle enough to wear every day but sparkly enough to wear with a bling necklace for going out. I don't wear the 'going out' earrings I have much at all - but then I hate the whole 'saving things for best' thing re clothes, jewellery, china etc.

On your budget I'd buy her a pair of diamond studs.

tiffany.co.uk have earings under £200, they won't date and imagine how excited she'll be seeing that little teal tiffany box

MrsBadger · 22/09/2006 13:00

depends on the recipient whether they'd get excited by the turquoise box or not...

JollyRogerMamaG · 22/09/2006 13:13

God I love Tiffany jewellery, get so excited when I see the box! I'd go for diamond studs

Stiglet · 22/09/2006 13:16

Well I imagine it'd be slightly more exciting than an elizabeth duke box

CarolinaMoon · 22/09/2006 13:17

you wouldn't Mrs Badger?

CarolinaMoon · 22/09/2006 13:23

what kind of earrings does she normally wear ILC? dangly or not? blatant or subtle?

JollyRogerMamaG · 22/09/2006 13:26

If you can get somebody to chip in wiht you, I've got this and it is gorgeous.

MrsBadger · 22/09/2006 14:21

Carolina - sorry, no

Smacks of lack of imagination to me - I think some people assume someone will like it just because it's Tiffany without thinking what the recipient would actually appreciate. And their stuff is often so instantly recognisable it seems that every other woman is wearing the 'kiss' earrings or the 'Return to Tiffany' neacklace...
Also I spent too long in the City where it seemed to be the unfaithful / neglectful husband's gift of choice because they knew the woman would go gooey at the sight of the box and forgive them anything.

Of course, Stiglet may be spot on and they may have just the right gift for Mr Caboose's sister, in which case none of the above applies and you can freely ignore me .

CarolinaMoon · 22/09/2006 14:27

you are right about the return to tiffany stuff. a bit tragic to need such obvious jewellery - 'look at me, my boyf can afford tiffany'.

I'd deffo prefer a tiffany box to the distinct lack of any boxes atm

KTeepee · 22/09/2006 14:44

I would go for diamond studs too

ilovecaboose · 22/09/2006 19:03

Thanks for the messages - I had to go out which is why I didn't reply.

TBH she probably wouldn't be fussed by a tiffany box. She usually wears 'cute' or 'funny' studs and we thought it would be nice to have something really special/different - quite posh IYSWIM.

Can't increase the budget unfortunately as dp has no other siblings to go in with it and no one else we could really ask.

Have liked some of the ideas though - given me a bit more guidance so thanks

what d'ya think of these?

Finally convinced dp to give me an opinion - its his sister ffs (not that she isn't lovely but I do think he should have some imput). These are what we are leaning towards - bit more than studs, but not too full on. She ain't exactly 'bling' or into labels or anything like that.

They are very dressy though aren't they? Personally couldn't imagine having many opportunities to wear them - I would only wear something like that to a ball or posh restaurant so hardly even a monthly outing. Though it would depend on her "style" (but can't believe many 18 year olds dress to the hilt regularly.) Most people I know who have diamond studs wear them practically every day and they go with everything.

Blondilocks · 22/09/2006 19:30

I like those, they would go nicely with a necklace & bracelet that OH has given me for previous gifts . I think they'd be good as could be worn for posh occasions but wouldn't look out of place if worn more regularly.

I also quite like these \link{http://www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/detail/R/4641035/N/57+89/]

and the amethyst version of the earrings that you listed.

ilovecaboose · 22/09/2006 19:38

They are dressy, but I think thats what we're looking for really. She prefers animal studs and mismatching ones for school and everyday, so I think if we brought her a pair she could wear everyday she wouldn't.

I'd just really like to get her a pair for very special occassions, hopefully ones she can wear for years.

Blondilocks · 22/09/2006 19:44

I think the style would be fine in a reasonable length of time. They do look nice, but if she doesn't often wear earrings that aren't studs they're not likely to feel too big I don't think.

CarolinaMoon · 23/09/2006 14:17

are those earrings maybe a bit 'old' for her atm?

It might be a long time before she wants to wear anything so formal - even at a uni ball or whatever.

Can I be a real PITA and suggest buying something she'll use now rather than in several years' time? She may never be the kind of person who wears those earrings.

codwiggle · 23/09/2006 16:43

i take her shoppignf ro it
tell ther hte budget
she woudl Love that

Twinkie1 · 23/09/2006 16:58

The Tiffany Sevillana Drop Earring are gorgeous and not only bought by unfaithful husbands but gorgeous faithful ones too I will have you know.

I think at 18 a Tiffany Gift would be terribly exciting and something she can treasure and keep forever.

And as I don;t have any of the stuff Jade Goody wore (bless her) I can say that I still get excited when I get some jewellry from their - wedding ring and engagement ring were from their too mainly because they are so good with their customer service and when it comes to diamonds really know their stuff.

There am feeling better about someone slating my fave jewellers now (well it would be bulgari but DH not got hsi bonus yet!! He He!!)

Blondilocks · 23/09/2006 22:52

I don't think they're really just for ball type things. They wouldn't look out of place going out for a meal or on a date I don't think.

ilovecaboose · 23/09/2006 22:58

Went shopping today and pooped in to a smaller jewellers on way to buy earrings we liked.

Anyway we found some we liked better - less ostentatious. Very small drop earrings with a blue topaz at bottom - not with surround if that makes sense. White gold. Looking back I think the other ones we liked may have been too much.

Thanks for all the comments its really helped me narrow down what I wanted.

Oh and went and bought some nasty cheap plastic (pat butcher style) earrings to wind her up - got really nice box for them

Not sure she'll fall for it as she knows us very well - but her mum definately will
