How to posh up work wear?

I have decided to dress for the job I want, but slightly at loss as to how? Was going to start with decent trousers, shoes (brogues, don't do heels) and coat and then add in blazer and tops as can't afford to do in one go.

Does this sound ok? What stores are good, I normally just buy from tesco online as can't afford much.
Finally, the biggie, how does one do it subtley and gradually? Girl here went home one Friday as frump and came in the Monday all killer heels and short skirt andI do not want that, too contrived

Shirt/ blouse rather than t-shirt type top.

Suit and shirt, rather than trousers, cardigan and top.

Polished shoes, tidy hair, subtle jewellery and make up.

I usually wear midi skirts (tube skirts from Next) with comfy heels from M&S and tuck a shirt into the skirt. I rotate four skirts, six tops and two pairs of shoes. I also have two blazers (Primark) just in case I need to look a little smarter.

I always look out for online discount codes for when I need to do a 'work' shop. For example, never pay full price in Dorothy Perkins because they constantly have online events where you can save 20% with free postage.

Coordinating accessories and colours, smart bag, polished shoes, tidy hair and nails make most work outfits look professional and elegant.

Maybe worth going to a department store and try on some clothes/looks to get an idea of how you plan to put your work wear wardrobe together. Once you have an idea of sizing etc for various labels you could look around on eBay for cheep but smart clothing. Also worth looking around for money off codes etc, I never buy anything full price.

I come to S&B for advice, not to suggest clothes, but if you want subtlety, just go slowly. So, maybe a necklace today, a new top next week, a jacket one day the week/month after.
It will also go with your restricted funds: basically, as you need to replace an item, replace it with something to suit the image your after, rather than your current wardrobe. Then there is no sudden style change, just a slow shift.
