New York in October

MotherOfFerals · 31/08/2014 21:44

First time in the Big Apple (squeeee!) and would love some ideas of what to wear- have been watching re runs of SATC for inspiration and may consider packing a tutu.
I think it'll be fairly warm, and what I pack needs to be capsule, which I've always been shit at, and fit for lots of walking.
Oh, and while I'm here, a link to the Cos All Saints ish deconstructed cardi was posted on one of the threads but I can't find it all- could that kind soul re link please?

Just wear something comfortable. I have been to the US 3 times - California, the deep south and New England. Americans dress casually and comfortably.

You don't say when in October you are going.

We were there at the end of October, but they had a heatwave so it was 21 degrees during the day, but we were told it wasn't normal.

MotherOfFerals · 31/08/2014 21:55

But this is New York and surely everyone dresses like Carrie?!
I'll be there in the second week for 7 days. I love Autumn but for packing would rather it was definitely warm or definitely cold as can't be arsed with layers and carrying around parka & Wellies on the off chance.

If it was this www.cosstores.com/gb/Archive/Overlap_wool_jumper/19852857-17696416.1, it's sold out

MotherOfFerals · 31/08/2014 21:58

Yes sharing it was that one. Didn't realise Cos had an archive. Thanks for linking.

That's exactly when I went last year mother.
It started off quite grey and cool but by the afternoon it was scorchio (well, not coat weather anyway). I didn't take a coat but bought a lightweight down jacket from Uniqlo when we were out there which packed into a bag like a sleeping bag. I could put it on and put it away really easily. And I matched all the New Yorkers!

Things like cropped jeans, comfy sandals (Birkis for me), trainers, cotton sweaters, long sleeved tops over a vest (take off top & tie round waist/put in bag if you get hot) were good. Or light skirts with tops and leggings worked for me.

The problem with TV is that it doesn't portray reality.

Each time I have been to the US I have felt overdressed because I had made a bit of an effort.

Eliza22 · 31/08/2014 22:29

I went in Oct 2012. God, it was hot! I took jeans, skirts and boots to wear with wooly tights and a "proper" coat. I was pretty much boiling, the whole time. Difficult to say really.

Redfox · 31/08/2014 22:47

I think layers is your answer.

I may be going in mid February for a long city break - anyone have an idea what the weather will be like then? Or will it be like the Uk, usually cold dull & wet? (excited anyway!)

Cranagh · 31/08/2014 23:07

New York in February is generally freezing (I lived there for years), often heavy snow. You'll need a good coat and boots. Oct is still fairly mild and Central Park is beautiful in the autumn. Layers are a good idea, the tutu, not so much!

Bunbaker · 31/08/2014 23:08

Average February temperatures are 4 - 6 degrees C, with temperatures below freezing at night.

poisonedbypen · 31/08/2014 23:10

The wind in feb can be bitingly cold.

littlewhitebag · 01/09/2014 07:13

I have been in October and it was cold. So cold we had to buy hats, gloves and scarves. It must have been near the end of October as the Halloween decorations were everywhere.

Also, take the comfiest shoes you have as your feet will get very sore pounding the pavements.

whitewineandchocolate · 01/09/2014 07:34

October 2013 - freezing the first few days then a heat wave by the end of the week so be prepared, that was half term week. We walked miles so I agree, comfy shoes needed.

Eliza22 · 01/09/2014 08:01

Oh God, yes! No new shoes.... You need comfort +++

Floisme · 01/09/2014 12:53

I've been in October and also in late January/early February. In October the weather was all over the place: hot and sunny one day then cold and wet the next. The nights were chilly. February was absolutely chuffing freezing with heavy snow (but some beautiful, clear sunny days too, despite the cold). Either way, I would say comfy shoes, something rain-proof and loads of layers as buildings are either centrally heated or air conditioned.

Most of the people I came across dressed in a relaxed but quite conservative style so if you're looking to blend in, I would say more Rachel and Monica than Carrie. But I also found it pretty easy going and, if you fancy wearing a tutu, I'm sure no-one will bat an eyelid!

Have a great time, I'm very Envy

Coumarin · 01/09/2014 14:46

Oh no! Please don't tell me it'll be warm.

We're going around then and I thought it'd be like a cool spring day is here. I hate dressing for warm weather.

My stomach has sank a bit I must admit. Sad

Coumarin · 01/09/2014 15:05

Ok. I've got a grip now I've rtft. We're going later than you but I'm still confused.

I have almost nothing to take after a huge wardrobe cull so have to buy everything new.

MirandaWest · 01/09/2014 15:09

I'm going to be there right at the end of September. Planning on taking hand luggage only. Am hoping this works out Grin

TSSDNCOP · 01/09/2014 21:00

I have sunbathed on the South Street Seaport deck in November!

I'd go with black skinny pants for evening to wear with different tops/shoes.

Day: jeans that can be worn with ballet shoes or biker boots (wear them on the plane to lighten your case), t-shirts, scarves, cardi and lightweight jacket for day.

TSSDNCOP · 01/09/2014 21:03

Agree about Feb. very cold and wet. Have been there when there's deep, deep snow then too. Dress as for winter here.

Trouble is, if it's cold and you haven't packed there won't be jumpers/scarves in the stores as all the stock will be SS.

Bunbaker · 01/09/2014 21:08

I doubt that ballet shoes are a very practical shoe to wear for hardcore sightseeing. You need something that will stand up to a lot of walking and that offers support.

I walked for miles round London the other weekend and wore Sketchers Go Walk.

Coumarin · 02/09/2014 01:39

Yy TSS I think layers is the way to go for me.

I had a look at the temp for when we go and as luck would have it, it's currently giving the exact temp as it was today so a mild to cool spring day. I'm fine with that give or take the odd degree.

Coumarin · 02/09/2014 01:40

*are the way

Coumarin · 02/09/2014 01:42

*as it was here today I mean.

WorriedMutha · 02/09/2014 01:59

You will just have to check the weather before you go. We went for October half term a couple of years ago and within a couple of hours of us landing, the city was in lockdown due to hurricane Sandy. The city that never sleeps was suddenly paralysed and the weather was erratic. An experience to say the least but weather is weather and you just have to go with it. The Halloween parade was cancelled, no NY marathon and Broadway shut down for about half of the week. You will still have a fab time and hopefully won't encounter an extreme weather event.
