Making bootleg jeans look less than tragic

ocelot41 · 31/08/2014 15:30

Good women of Mumsnet, please help! Although slim ish (12-14) I am also shortish ( 5 4") busty and irredeemably thunderous of thigh and bootcuts are the only jeans I can get to fit me. But in flats I look just...dumpy...mumsy...DULL. Help me? Would boots with wedges look OK? Is there ANY way to make bootcuts look OK or am I doomed to the outer circle of style hell?

Those Great Bum jeans seem to make a huge difference.

I am well over 40 and will continue to wear jeans [sticks tongue out]

Medievalmurdermystery · 01/09/2014 11:25

Oasis Eva slim bootcut are great. I wear them with pride. As long as the length is right (they come in regular and long) they are fine. Ideally you do need heels, wedges are good.

Ohhhh this is topical for me. I have just lost some weight and have just got back into my Gap Long and Lean jeans from 4 years ago. I lived in them for a while and loved them. Also they are one of the few pairs of jeans that are actually long enough (36" leg). I really don;t want to dump them Sad

victoryinthekitchen · 01/09/2014 14:11

what about jeggings, more supportive than leggings but not as drastic as skinnies?

I beg to differ and think that skinny jeans can look great on pear-shaped figures provided they are worn to brazenly flout the booty, IYSWIM. So a short-waisted top, slightly fitted, is necessary too. Very sexy.

Bunbaker · 01/09/2014 16:25

I look dreadful in skinnies. IMO huge thighs are not a good look.

PricillaQueenOfTheDessert · 01/09/2014 16:28

I'm short and round too, unfortunately for me larger of girth than you.
Bootleg are just that - made to be worn with boots. A chunky medium-low heel looks best.

Bakeoffcakes · 01/09/2014 16:37

I like boot cuts too. I'm short and slim but of large boobage so the boot cut balances me out. I do agree that. A lot of people wear them too short- the length is really important.

Butterpuff · 01/09/2014 16:43

I was wondering where all the Bootcut's were hiding when I was out Sunday, I didn't realise they were out.

I love my boot cuts.

What I don't love is that I couldn't find a single pair of short length maternity jeans at the weekend. Might buy a tube skirt.

Oly4 · 01/09/2014 16:50

I too wear boot cuts. With heels they look fAb and flattering on my curvy shape. I wear black ones or very dark denim and I think that's key. Tube skirts give me thunder thighs unfortunately

Ok so popped to shops this arvo whilst working from home.

Now has pair of schplendid chunky boots from Clarks linked to by Chippy. Vair vair comfortable and warm and everything. Thanks Chippy!

Tried on everyday slim fit jeans in Next which were ... mmm ok. Front was alright but didn't like big pockets on arse - did my bum look big in them ? Oh yes...Still not sure that that is the right cut for me though. May be brave and try boyfriends.

Alas no Gap near me so will need morning off DC duties to go scope... It did make me realise how truly dreadful, too tight and knackered my old jeans are tho. Christ, just about anything would be an improvement! I think darker denim deffo the way to go though...

Sorry Victory tried jeggings. The results were DIRE. And Bonsoir I salute anyone 40 or over who is still flaunting their booty. But I'm not really in that camp.

Sitting on it yes, occasionally having it patted affectionately by DH, yes. Flaunting? Um, no.

Got a cracking rack though Grin

I am very similar size and shape to you and alway wore bootcuts.

However, on realising this was a no no I branched out.

Peg trousers (asos) cigarette pants etc look smart and because they are sort of tailored, don't make you look thunder thighs like skinnies can.

I don't do leggings or any kind of skin tight stuff.

ocelot41 · 01/09/2014 19:31

Liking the fuller skirt concept MsAstronaut. Idiot question though - tops in or out?

OP posts:
MsAstronaut · 01/09/2014 19:41

Not a silly question - it depends on the skirt, especially what's going on at the waist area, and the top. A slim-fitting, long-sleeved t-shirt can look good tucked in, while a kind of more relaxed/boxy jumper is better over the top. Some skirts (like the one I linked to) have an elasticated waist which actually works well but I prefer to cover that bit up. I don't wear shirts, so not sure what you would do there. I think if you are doing fuller skirt, especially if it's a print, it looks best if the rest is quite sleek and simple.

ocelot41 · 01/09/2014 20:15

Thanks. I do feel a bit of a fashion dufus. I had seen that skirt in ahem Boden and wondered about it. But the reviews have been really bad ....

OP posts:
MsAstronaut · 01/09/2014 20:43

I've got the skirt in the mustard/grey spotty print. I've just had a look at the reviews, there are good and bad and I think what they're saying is it is kind of full! It does stick out and makes a feature of your bottom half IYSWIM, which is what I like about it, and as one person says is a good look for pear/hourglass shapes. You do have to be careful what you put on top, a longer jumper for example looks wrong because the full skirt pushes it out and then you can't see your waist. But with a short or tucked-in top, it emphasises the waist.

You could always give it a go with a free returns deal, or look for something similar in a lighter fabric.

saltnpepa · 01/09/2014 20:43

I have never seen an Italian woman look like that and I lived in Italy for 10 years!

ChippyMinton · 01/09/2014 20:43

You're welcome.
Which ones did you get?

MsAstronaut · 01/09/2014 20:48

disclaimer: I don't claim to be a fashion expert...! just on a constant mission to find out what works for my giant pear bum and thighs.

Also Boden is hit and miss, but the returns policy means that's OK.

ocelot41 · 01/09/2014 21:00

These ones Chippywww.clarks.co.uk/p/26101053

And thanks for the tip MsAstronaut. I will give it a whirl. I think the number of skinnie Minnie's saying it made their hips look humongous put me off. But like you say, no harm trying. Would it work for flat knee highs or does it need a heel do you think?
