any hairdressers about - brassy dark hair!

my hair was dyed in the salon from bleached blonde to dark brown. i am overall happy with the results, although i wouldn't mind it slightly lighter (natural colour is light brown)

i notice my hair looks quite coppery and brassy at times. i don't want to keep having to dye it apart from the roots, is there anyway i can tone it to get rid of the brassiness? my hairdresser says its because there is still bleached blonde underneath the dark dye. does this mean that silver shampoo or the likes would work to tone it, as i still have a good bit of that. thanks

A brown semi every other week or so will take the brashness out of it until all the blonde is out. Your stylist is right and TBH I would have used a semi to colour it from the get go as it lasts longer as it stains the hair.

thank you tutt that is very helpful. one more question... could i use a semi that is a little lighter than the dye that is currently on my hair? i think i am going to try and do it myself at home now, because the salon visits are getting quite dear, and ive heard that brown is easier to do yourself than blonde.

No I wouldn't TBH I would get all the blonde out of your hair (or near as damn it) before trying to go a little lighter as your hair could go a lovely shade of khaki.

I'd maybe consider having a few highlights put in a few weeks if your hair is strong enough, it breaks up the brassiness and if very fine will look more natural.

ok thank you for the advice i will have a look at dark semis in tesco - been actually thinking about highlights because im quite pale so i think they will break up the dark colour a bit and they will suit me. its just the thought of starting with the bleach again - as in once you start its hard to stop! will think about it and see :)

You don't have to use bleach just warmer/cooler tones to suit your skin colouring :) Before you apply semi do a little strand test ( and patch allergy test) just to make sure it isn't to dark, also remember that put any darker colour on blonde hair should have a red tone as the hair has been stripped of red and so if not added again the lovely khaki colour happens!

i have a cool skin tone - so would need ash browns - but with what you are saying about the blonde and red, does that mean i need to go for a brown with a red tone, such as a chocolate brown or something? i thought that because the hair dresser had already put a permanent colour over the bleach blonde as a base, i wouldn't have to worry about fixing the colour and errors - i thought it was a clean slate for me now. is there still a chance it could go green? if so i might just head to the hairdresser to do it because i do tend to make mistakes with hair! unless its foolproof, i can't be trusted lol

Depends on how the hair was re-pigged. If you have 'yellow' brassy tones then yes you need a brown with a little bit of red so warm shade. You don't have to go as dark as a chocolate. Just those wash in wash out will do it stops the fade.
If you go back to the stylist make sure they use a semi not a permanent as it will last longer.
