Help me with my hair, please!

My hair is a bloody nightmare! Currently it's far too long, (been putting off going to hair dresser due to previous disaster.) it's half way down my back. I can't wear it down at the moment because it's totally shapeless and just goes into the fuzzy triangle so every day I scrape it back in a bun or put it in a braid over my shoulder.

I really want it cut but have no clue on styles and must be able to tie it back. Previous hair dresser didn't "get" curly hair and cut it so short at the front it bounced right up and wouldn't fit in a pony tail. Sad I was also thinking I'd like to try highlights - could anyone offer suggestions? I was thinking a coppery colour would go with the dark red...

Help me with my hair, please!

Catkisser

Can you take a photo showing your face from the front iyswim? It much better to get a hair cut that suits your face and HAIR rather than just one to suit your hair.

Ok, see what you mean. Was trying to maintain some kind of anonymity but no need really I suppose!

Its ok - delete the photo later!

Let me have a think for a few mins

newnameforanewstart · 28/08/2014 15:58

Have you thought about something like this?

heart shaped face with wavy hair

I think that would look lovely on you, be long enough to pull up and take a load of the heaviness out of your hair and really give your curls some bounce

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:02

Oh I DO like that! Shock
Do you think it would be fairly low maintenance? What would stop it descending into the triangle of fuzz? Sorry, I'm truly clueless with hair - I'm guessing I can't just get away with dragging it down with a brush every morning any more...

this and this would work too.

Also have you thought about going shorter? A graduated bob would look lovely I think

Would you consider a soft fringe, possibly side swept?

Colour is tricky but I think your hair is naturally a similar colour to mine, and I have had all sorts of highlights and low lights put through mine - its a question of taste - find a GOOD colourist though.

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:06

I like the second one of those two better - I've never even considered a fringe! I think the first one you posted is best still. Grin
Think I'm terrified that a fringe would turn into a cloud of fuzz...

Its all about cut and the products you use.

I really rate aussie products get a shampoo and really lush conditioner for curly hair, then use their scrunch spray,

It should BASICALLY be a question if the CUT is good of wash, condition, let air dry, and scrunch hair whilst drying which is great for curly hair!

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:09

Thank you so much for your advice, it's more helpful than any hairdresser has ever given me! I'm willing to invest in good products, etc. am absolutely taking on board the air dry comment - I'm assuming I shouldn't be brushing through with a hairbrush while it dries?

Well it might be worth a consideration, I don´t mean a big heavy fringe. BUT your first reaction was quite strong, it would suit your face shape and your hair type is easy to maintain so I would certainly give it a try but remember to talk to your hairdresser they will be able to advise if it would work on your hair.

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:16

Thanks - I get paid tomorrow and need to do these things when I have a bit of money in my pocket, so there may be an updated picture to this thread very soon.
Appreciate your help x

NOOOO - never brush hair when its wet! Wet hair is fragile and susceptible to breakage, so for working out snarls and snags from any type of hair, use a wide-toothed comb instead.

If you want to brush your hair use a wooden toothed brush its better as its more gentle on fragile hair and won´t create static - no static = less frizz.

You simply cannot over-condition frizzy hair. You need a heavy conditioner for use every time you wash your hair, and a deep conditioner for use once a week.

Enhance your curls with a cream created for curly hair. Rub it in and let hair airdry.

Style serum Warm up a couple drops of this in your hands and palm over dry, frizzy curls. The serum will solve your frizz problems.

PS : feel the need to state I AM NOT A HAIRDRESSER!!!! I do however have hair very similar to yours in terms of curl

newnameforanewstart · 28/08/2014 16:21

OPPS - forgot to say ask the hair dresser to taper the end of the curl it will take a bit of the weight out and give you more bounce - if you´ve got it flaunt it!

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:23

Haha, don't worry - I wasn't planning suing you if it goes terribly wrong! :-)

Great - frizz-avoidance is paramount!

I've got frizzy curly hair as well. What I find works is using the 'curly girl' method of washing and styling my hair. I never brush it at all and I use conditioner as a styling balm to dampen down the frizz.

CatKisser · 28/08/2014 16:28

My curly mate never brushes hers either, hands and she has beautiful defined curls... Thinking this is the way forward...
