warm but fashionable coat for 13 year old dd - help!

DD is starting Year 8 and nearly 13 and I am having a 'mare buying her a winter coat Sad. She is 5 foot 2 - 3 so adult height, but slim. I want something in dark colours which is warm and shower proof. She hates the usual M& S /Next coats because they are too long or puffy and she says they are for 'kids'. If anyone can suggest anything here I'd be grateful - not too worried about cost.

My DD has a barbour international. She is 12 and going into Y8. I think she is about 5ft 5 or 6 tall now and still fits in the child 12/13 one, which is narrower and significantly cheaper than the adult version. It's fleece lined and reasonably waterproof but doesn't have a hood. She has worn it though which counts for a lot!

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/08/2014 07:52

Superdry windcheater, dd and I are both that size/height and have one each, warm, waterproof and have a hood, there's lots to choose from

Thanks, I will have a look at those suggestions - any other ideas gratefully received thanks Smile

Parka.
Loads of kids are wearing them now.
The teen section of new look has them.
Next has a lovely one.
My dd got one from debenhams yesterday that's flattering as it's nipped in at the waist.

TongueBiter · 28/08/2014 08:04

Yy to parkas. Any of the High St shops have them in at eye watering prices and also saw them in matalan.

donnie · 28/08/2014 08:22

Thanks folks. I have just looked at one online at F&F (Tesco) which she actually says she likes - it's a navy blue padded jacket with hood (can't do links ) so that's an option. Not sure how warm it would be though. Her default position would be to wear no coat at all and die of TB and consumption like her friends Confused

Dd has the superdry windcheater and although very warm id like her to have a parka so it cover a bum and more of her legs but she turns her nose up at them

Let get go back to school and within a week she'll let you know what everyone else is wearingWink

MrsRogerSterling · 28/08/2014 09:04

Dd1 has this here It looks lovely on and seems very warm.

donnie · 28/08/2014 09:08

I like those Matalan ones MrsRogerSterling - can you tell me how the sizes come up on those please? my dd is almost 13 but usually I have to get her a 14. Thanks.

I went a size up for dd and it fits nicely but has room for cardigan/jumper underneath so perfect for when it's cold. It does look more expensive than it is!

mrsmaturin · 28/08/2014 09:25

Just take her shopping and buy the one she likes because it is the ONLY way you will ever get her to wear it. Try and find a scarf and gloves she likes for extra warmth and make sure she has an umbrella. It's all you can do. My dds both have waxed type jackets, one from Debenhams and one from Miss Selfridge.

I'm impressed that your 13yo DD wants to wear a coat. My two would rather go blue. When it snowed a couple of years ago DD1 went to school in hat, gloves....and a thin polyester school blazer. Grin

a few of ds2's friends have these hes just about to go into year 8 the girls like the khaki parkas www.next.co.uk/x54582s6#675300x54

I brought this one for dd as its quite lightweight and folds up small for her bag, and noticed a few older girls trying them on www.next.co.uk/x542556s4#672128x54

all the boys seem to have superdry windcheaters here, but the girls more likely to have parkas or quilted barbour/joules type coats.

Dd just got a grey one in primark that fits well over her blazer she actually pointed out herself which is a win win for me as I know she'll wear it Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/08/2014 16:55

My 12yo DD has a Superdry coat - not what I'd have chosen , but it is well made, has two zips and is waterproof.
She originally wanted the fleece lined but I managed to convince her that the one with the mesh lining would be more practical.
She wears a blazer, can add a jumper and her jacket needs to fit in her locker.

It was £75 , but I'd pay £40 for a school coat so IIRC she paid part. (And this means she looks after it too Wink )
