I am going out with my husband and am shocking at doing my hair. I am too tight to pay a hairdresser but want fairly big hair for our evening out (think Cheryl Cole)

Any tips please?

YouTube is your friend here for easy to follow tutorials.

Just type in whatever youre looking for, eg 'curly up-dos for medium length hair' etc.

Look for a video thats not too long though. Grin

Volume is all about product, not just technique.

Use a volumising shampoo/conditioner combo, then a thickening product.

For actual back combing, hold the section of her very loosely in your non combing hand, and comb in big C shapes, firmly pushing the hair down when it reaches roots.

You will need a tail comb to produce some great back combing . when I do the tousled 'big' look,I use Bumble and Bumble thickening spray before blow drying roughly ,then loose waves with babyliss hair wand then brush these out and tousle it and back comb underneath ...

There's some powder, a few brands do it, I used tresemmes that was good and it you lift a section of hair and shake the powder on the underneath. Then all you do is a tiny bit of back combing and your hair just rises! It is so good, hair does feel a bit 'gummy' afterwards though.

I've been addicted to back combing for years due to my pointy head Grin but have recently discovered extra volume dry shampoo- it's brilliant. You just spray it on the roots where you want volume and rub it in a bit, you can then back comb a little if you like but I've found its often not necessary. It creates a long lasting kind of platform, it's great. Batiste do one as do Superdrug.

Yes its like that powder fifa suggests but I find the spray easier to direct than shaking it on.

Ooh lots of ideas! Thanks so much Grin

Fishtail plait is the only thing I still cant master, Blush for shame.

TessTackle · 26/08/2014 21:43

ImATot, split the hair in two. Take hair from outside of one half and put it in the other half. Do the same on the other side. Repeat.

But I dont seem to have enough fingers Tess - it all just falls away from the inside! Sad

If you pull it quite tight while you're doing it, you can always loosen it up to look more casual once you've put a band in the end.
