How easy/difficult is it to use GHDs??

Hi all,

I know the title sounds a bit stupid, but I do have a stupid question... is it easy to straightner your own hair ?!?!

I am asking because I have spent loads of money on gadgets that are supposed to make my hair look nice and none of them work... I am sure it's me as I have read great reviews for these gadgets right here on MN... e.g. I bought the BabyBliss big hair a few months back and I just cannot get the perfect glowed dried look I am after Sad

I have very thick and frizzy should length hair and I am thinking of investing in a GHD as a last resort.... but I don't want to spend the money and then not get the results as it seems that I am pretty stupid when it comes to using these things and I just don't seem to get. the hand of them Sad

TIA Smile

I am the most low maintenance person EVER, and I can do it. I've had GHDs for about ten years now, my hair sounds similar to yours. I love them. I never get it as perfect as they do at the salon but near enough!

Not sure how well you can see it but I've attached a pic of my hair with one side straightened and the other not, it's a pretty big difference!

Tip - use heat protection spray! I can't remember the brand of mine but it's in a black and gold bottle. It's marvellous. That's the only product I use.

GHD's are a gift from the gods, easy to use too. I usually put the top half of my hair up in a clip & start underneath. Then put the straightened hair in a loose ponytail & unclip/straighten the top. All takes around 3 or 4 minutes & since using the Garnier Uktimate Blends sleek restorer range only needs a 60 second going over the next morning.

So so so easy. I am shit at all things hair related, but even I can use them! They have made such a difference to me!

If you know someone who owns some, ask for a test run!

They are very easy and quick to use, it´s not like blowdrying where there is a "technique" that requires actual skill. It´s kind of just like combing your hair. Can you borrow a friend´s to see what they´re like before you decide to buy?

I think the heat protection spray described above by ButtonMoonicorn is the GHD own brand. The Moroccan Oil one is also good.

If your hair is thick you might want to consider getting the ones with the larger plates to speed up the straightening process.

Hi all,

Thanks for the encouraging comments! Sounds like I should be fine Smile

Any idea which model of GHD I should go for ?

Also, do you spray on each section before you straighten or once all over your head... I neven know if I have enough coverage....

ButtonMoon thanks for the pic. We do have similar hair... except that mine is boring black while your colour is cool Smile

Thanks mumtosp I love this colour! I figure while I'm a SAHM and can get away with bright pink streaks in my hair I definitely should!

Get the straighteners. I have never used the wide plate ones, always coped fine with standard ones. I just clip up the top layer, run the straighteners through with one hand and follow with a comb in the other hand. Spritz the spray all over first, don't bother with individual sections for that.

I have thick curly hair and I wouldn't recommend the wide plate GHD's. I got much better results with the standard sized ones, so much so I'm going to sell them. Oh and yes, they are v v easy to use.
