What to wear to work in the rain

Has anyone got any top tips for what to wear for the daily commute in the rain? I so despise London public transport in the rain, it's disgustingly filthy and makes me very angry indeed! I did have a pair of short wellies from Massimo Dutti but they split last winter (after only a few wears I should add!). I would heartily appreciate any innovative suggestions as to how to shield myself from the water and grime.

Don't wear trousers , is my tip. I always wear a short skirt or dress with tights and long boots. And a good waterproof coat, I have the Merrell Ellenwood so shoot me now so I arrive and take my coat off and am dry as a bone, tights dry quickly. And keep smart shoes at work.

Thanks all - sorry I got distracted from this thread by dramas with the dratted OH. The trouble with the boots, tights, skirt/dress combo is the boots!! They are always so wide of leg!

Definitely no trousers.

Chelsea boot/ankle height style wellies or trainers. TK Maxx quite often do a short style welly. Wear with a thicker ribbed sock over your tights bunched down to just above the top of the boot to fill in the gap and keep your feet a bit warmer. That sounds minging/weird but I have that problem with lots of boots and find it does the job, especially in situations where it doesn't really matter what you look like. Or leg warmers! Then nice shoes in bag or at work. (and even a spare pair of tights if its a monsoon)

Knee length waterproof coat rather than just bum skimming. Then if you are lucky enough to get a seat you don't get a damp bottom or make the back of your skirt dirty, and it covers the majority of your clothes. And one with a decent hood that stays up so you can ditch the umbrella.

Rucksack for hands free, but I think I'd do that all the time if I commuted regularly, as much as I love a nice handbag.

Hate travelling to work in the rain. The school run bit is worse for me, as its too close to get the bus but long enough to get absolutely drenched, and I go straight on to work after.

Thanks 'vikkil*. Yes, you're right - I need a knee length waterproof coat.

Why is donning a Merrell Ellenwood a shoot-able offence?! I had never heard of them.

Narrower calf boots are possible-you just have to be determined. Best ones I've found have had a buckle/buckles you can tighten, looks better than it sounds Grin Or pay to get them taken in. It's ££ but worth it. Also agree with legwarmers if necessary. Honestly once you've got the boots it's easy.
