DD and her oily hair - any tips?

DD is turning 12 and since the past year, has been having extremely oily hair. I suspect it's her hormones, although she still has clear skin and the odd 1 or 2 pimples every other month, which clears up in no time. She does not have dandruff and her scalp is not itchy.

Shampoos for normal hair don't work on her. Her hair turns really oily at the end of the day, to the point of looking clumpy. And if she skips washing for more than a day, her hair starts to smell rank from a distance and looks stringy and ick. The only shampoo so far that she has tried and worked on her is the Paul Mitchell Shampoo number 2 (it's a clarifying shampoo) and she has to use it every other day in order to keep her hair looking okay. She has long hair and it tangles after shampooing, but she doesn't use conditioner because whenever she does, her hair becomes very oily after just a day. I feel like she should use a conditioner because she's not willing to cut her hair shorter and long hair gets tangley after washing, but don't know what conditioner wouldn't worsen the oiliness.

I wonder what else she can try or do about this?

She did do leaving her hair unwashed for a week before. In fact before she developed this oily hair condition, she used to only need washing hair every few days, sometimes a week. In fact my other DCs don't need washing their hair very often, especially my frizzy haired younger DD who has dry hair and scalp. But for my eldest, it's like one day last year, I noticed her hair was really stringy and had a strong unpleasant odour, so I told her to go wash her hair. And ever since then her hair got very oily quickly. Initially I let it slip and because she didn't like hair washing often, I thought maybe she can go a few days without washing and see how it went. But it got really bad to the point where she needed two washes in a row to get her hair clean again if she skipped shampooing for a few days, so eventually it became a daily wash for hygiene reasons.

DD tried conditioning before shampooing yesterday and said it was better - hair still looked clean and was easier to comb too. So this seems to work. Will buy a dry shampoo when we go shopping in two days or so. It might not work but still worth a try. Hopefully it's just a teenage phase she's going through.

I'm a bit late but I used herbal essences clarifying shampoo & conditioner for greasy hair. Thoroughly cleans without drying x

I am also late to this thread but one of my DTDs has a similar problem. We seem to have solved it with initial washing with T-gel to clear her scalp and then using a non silicone, no parabans etc shampoo- I bought some Timotei pure from Poundland after seeing it recommended on here. Made a massive difference. Use dry shampoo if needed after a couple of days.
