How to apply mascara to bottom lashes

I've never really bothered with lower lashes as I could never seem to apply it well. Seeing it on other people it looks really nice as it seems to frames the eyes nicely without needing liner. I need a bit more definition as am starting to look older and need to make a bit more effort with make up.
My bottom lashes seem quite long though so I'm worried about spider legs.

I currently use cliniques lash power mascara as its the only one I've ever found not to smudge but it does seem to make my lashes a bit stiff.

Any advice on applying properly gratefully received.

I have long top and bottom lashes and I recently discovered Clinique Bottom Lash mascara. It has a tiny brush that allows you to really work into the bottom lash line so you get that liner effect. I just do that and remove the brush (so I don't apply it all the way to the end of the lash) to avoid spider legs.

Maybelline do a similar dual sided one, but I prefer the clinique one. I think big brushes just swipe it all over the lash and the smaller brush gives more control.

Failing that, I've used these interdental brushes with my regular mascara!

You can do it with normal mascara. Just hold the brush vertically and brush down, one or two lashes at a time.

Oh and you need to scrape/wipe off the wand first as most hold far too much product

Clinique's bottom lash mascara is brilliant. Almost impossible to mess up, even if you're as cackhanded as me

Thanks everyone. I have bought the bottom lash mascara today so will see how I get on with it tomorrow.

I just zig-zag my mascara lightly on top of the bottom lashes after I've applied mascara on the top lashes (so there isn't as much on the brush).
If the mascara is quite wet, it's worth letting it dry on the top lashes before applying to the bottom lashes to avoid that it smudges all over the top lid.

It helps tilting your head down and looking up a bit (into a mirror) when doing the bottom lashes, in the same way as it helps tilting the head up and looking down (into a mirror) when doing the top lashes - it creates a bit more air between the skin and the lashes so you shouldn't get mascara on the skin.

If I don't want spidery bottom lashes I make sure to just apply nearer the root of the lashes and not to try to get mascara on the ends of the lashes.

A small comb, such as the Real Techniques lash-brow groomer or the Boots version can help if you find the mascara clumps or if you've applied a bit too much. I personally don't like the plastic versions, but the metal combs are good - like these:
