I'm about to do this, so will watch with interest.

My plan was to start by getting rid of anything that doesn't fit any more, is looking tatty or that I haven't worn since last winter.

Not sure where I go from there though!

I have done this recently. You will need time and bin bags. I went through everything if it looked tatty it went in the bin, if it look ok I tried it on and if I liked (not just it was ok) it I put it in the keep pile and if not in the charity bag pile.

I did it before moving house and found I needed to do it again when unpacking.

Start with underwear drawer. Make lists of what you need

Then shoes - clean and put away summer ones

Then four piles - for charity, for bin, maybe, keep

Then bag up the charity, dump the bin pile. Clean out your wardrobe and truest yourself to wooden hangers.

Then try on all the maybes - take a photo and analyse or ask a friend for the truth. Then will the keep - repair, iron and make lists

They always sayy to chuck out anything you haven't worn for a year but in my opionion that's a bit harsh. I say two years.

When it comes to jeans though, I just put on and lose 7lbs every 18 months or so depending on how focussed on fitness i am.. so now i don't throw out my size 12 jeans. I have a bag of size 12 trousers and I'm not throwing them out. It's not defeatism, it's just a realistic acknowledgement that I can't always be focused on fitness and working out and calorie counting etc.... I am size ten sometimes and I'm size 12 sometimes. I've been persuaded before to throw out all my size 12 clothes and then I regretted it.

I don't live in fear of falling off the 'wagon' either. It's just different priorities at different times. Ebb and flow. So don't let a personal shopper tell you to throw out all your 'fat' clothes!!!

i made myself wear something new each day until i had worked through my wardrobe. anything that was so awful or didn't fit got put in bag for second hand shop. this also made me find things that i actually quite liked but had never used out of laziness or routine

Karbea · 18/08/2014 14:54

dreaming of sun I'm doing that now.
It's working ok with tops, but I'm still only wearing my fav jeans, needed to be a bit stricter with myself ;)

Even if things are tatty you can still give them to charity rather than binning them - if they're not good enough to sell in the shop then they can still get money for them (they get sold to the rag trade by weight).

I usually still separate things into 2 bags and just let them know when I hand them over.

Get everything out, put it on the bed.

Look at each item and only put back in what makes you feel good/positive. Listen to your feelings. Do this in your underwear so that you can try things on.

If in doubt, throw it out - to ebay, the charity shop, passing it on or recycling.

If it is good, but too big/small keep it to one side.
