Allergic to Hair Dye

Years ago back in the early 90s I used to dye my hair quite regularly with a particular make of dye that was one tube that you put on your hair after you had washed it, rubbed it in then left it for 20 mins then rinse and Ta Dah nice dyed hair. The packet said it lasted for between 6-8 washes but I found it lasted much longer.

Gradually it became more difficult to get until it was no more. I have tried and tried to find an alternative but the hair dyes available now are minimum semi permanent and when I use them my scalp flames up and I get what I can only describe as thick cradle cap all over my head.
I have tried the hair dyes in the health food shops which have low ammonia in. I have tried a wash in wash out colour rinse, I have even tried going to the hairdressers and explained my problem. They used a particular dye that was supposed to be especially for people like me. They gave me a test which was fine but when I had it done I had patches of clear skin but large patches of cradle cap that stung.

Has anyone any suggestions as I feel no matter what I do I feel ever so grey.

Well I have an update. Not about which hair dye has been the most suitable but what I have discovered in the last few days.

We are having our boiler replaced by a new combi type, getting rid of old pipes that run like a map of the tube station all over the bungalow. Our bedrooms are at the front of the house as well as the boiler which is in a cupboard in our bedroom. Well the plumber before he started to work replacing the pipework tested for gas leeks and apparently we have a huge one with natural gas lying in abundance under the flooring of the bedrooms. We have been living with this apparently for probably years.
Anyway I googled the effects of breathing natural gas over long periods off time and it was like the scales falling from my eyes.
Side effects include,

allergies - dd has eczema and comes out in blotches when she eats one particular type of chocolate, I have allergies to wheat, dairy and a few weeks ago developed a serious itchy allergy to oranges of all things, it came out of nowhere. I also have the allergy to air dye which developed around the time we moved here.

Weight gain - me in particular gained huge amounts of weight just after we moved here. I could never understand why when I only ate a small amount per day yet could not lose weight and sometimes gained even more. Ds is in the same boat he doesnt eat a lot but seems to gain weight easily.

White blood count - my White blood count whenever I have had a blood test has always been high, out side the normal range. This has always been put dismissed as it showed that I had been ill recently although I hadn't.

These are only a few of the symptoms that everyone of us has shown over the years. I am hoping now everything has been replaced these symptoms should disappear and I might be able to go back to dying my hair, eating oranges and my family not to have these strange symptoms.

Wow Mandyandme, I really hope that brings an end to all the issues you've mentioned.

We moved into a house last year with old pipes and it brought on all sorts of allergies in my DD. Went to the allergy clinic but nothing conclusive found...booking gas check tomorrow.

For the record, I have no allergy to ppds or anything (yet) but am aware this can build over years of using certain products, which is why I switched to natural remedies wherever possible.

I cannot believe that it has issues with weight gain. I knew there was something not right. At one point last year I wrote down exactley what I ate for a week , no holds bar, just what I eat when not on a diet and added up the calorific value each day. On one "pig out day I ate 1700 calories but then on a couple of days I ate just under 1100 calories but mostly ate around 1350-1420 on the other days. Yet I put 2lbs on. I am not a secret eater I have been on holidays with people who comment on how little I eat compared with them who are super skinny. I am just hoping that part of the side effects of getting the house a new heating system is that without too much effort I will drop huge amounts of weight, my sons weight will fall off him and all the other annoying allergies disappear.
