Annoying handbag trends - I don't get it.

  1. Why carry a handbag in the crook of your arm? Doesn't it get in the way? Doesn't it hurt after a while? It even looks awkward.
  1. The picture on the left: why do these women always have the extra-long strap hanging down? It's detachable, so why not take it off? Put it in the bag, if you think you might suddenly need it? It seems be a 'thing' to leave it dangling there at all times, but never use it.

I am completely unreasonable for being annoyed by this, I know. Grin

This is a regular thread. Lots of people seem to find it annoying. I don't, i find it comfortable. I don't like hoiking bags on to my shoulder, probably because it makes my back sore and I don't like holding a bag down by my legs.

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2014 07:10

Oops, didn't know it'd been done to death!

What about the dangling-strap thing, though? That actually annoys me more. Unhook the bloody thing!

The handbag that I use most of the time has two longish straps, and sometimes I wear it on my shoulder, sometimes on the crook of my arm, and sometimes I hold them in my hand and dangle it down.

So, I have three different ways of annoying people with my handbag carrying. Wink

KoalaDownUnder · 14/08/2014 07:16

Nah, I'm probably the only person on the planet who has such a huge bee in my bonnet about it.

You know how you start noticing something that doesn't make sense to you, and then you can't stop?

Sorry, I wasn't admonishing you - just lots of people seem to agree with you Grin

I don't get the dangly strap thing either. I'd unclip it.
My mother and my aunts used to carry their bags like that in the 50's and 60's. I've got a box bag like one of my mums from back then. They are lovely. I totally look like Grace Kelly [not]

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/08/2014 07:17

I do all three things too, it brightens my day to know I am annoying others

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/08/2014 07:21

I use a bag like that, if I'm walking around for ages I carry it on my shoulder, if my shoulder tires I might wear it cross body, if I'm in and out of shops I have it in the crook of my arm and if I'm just walking across the car park at work I use the short handles in my hand (and strap so it doesn't trail). I'm certainly not going to detach the strap.

MaryWestmacott · 14/08/2014 07:31

I carry bags in the crook of my arm too and find it comfy, it's also good if it's in a busy or enclosed space so you have to be aware to avoid bumping someone /something, with the long strap over your shoulder or even short straps carried at the shoulder, you can bump other people or stuff, holding your bag in front of you also takes up less space on busy public transport (as you'd normally be given personal space in front of you anyway).

On bags that also have a long strap, I leave them attached, it makes going from one form of carrying to the other quicker, and I've managed to lose the long straps from bags in the past by taking them off. Just less faff. (And they are normally designed to be left attached and so don't look quite right without)

WildBillfemale · 14/08/2014 07:39

I noticed that after a few celebs were snapped with 'bag in crook of arm pose' many teenage lasses wander round town carrying their bag like this.
Like the selfy pout - it's body language fashion.

ChallyCreaks · 14/08/2014 07:42

My grandmother used to carry her handbag in the crook of her arm back in the day. Maybe she was a trendsetter. Grin

dexter73 · 14/08/2014 08:22

The Queen usually carries her bag in the crook of her arm so I don't think it is a new trend. Maybe she started it!

HolgerDanske · 14/08/2014 10:30

I carry my bag like that because it's the most natural way for me. I also carry it on my shoulder or in my hand if I'm in that sort of mood, or sometimes the style of the bag will dictate, but the crook of my arm is my default. It's not uncomfortable at all.

About the longer strap, I am lazy. I'm not going to faff about clipping an fun clipping the strap when I can just as easily let it hang there in case I want to carry it that way.

HolgerDanske · 14/08/2014 10:31

Hmmm *and unclipping

Pinkfrocks · 14/08/2014 10:36

I am giving up using shoulder bags because they make me lopsided, hurt my back and I now have a dropped shoulder.
I am now only using hand held bags that I hold or carry in the crook of my arm, and ideally they will have an attached cross the body strap in case I need both hands free.

I stick the long strap into the bag if possible, or wind it up a few times and use it as an extra carrying strap, across my arm.

I remember a long AIBU thread about this! I sometimes carry my bag in the crook of my arm. I see no reason for this to be of note Confused

However, there are many other petty things which do annoy me, so... Grin

Pastperfect · 14/08/2014 10:52

I always do this.

The criticism is that it is flashy as it gives maximum impact to expensive designer bag and huge rock on finger Grin

WitchWay · 14/08/2014 11:11

I think it looks silly and it annoys me too - often the arm is held forward with the mobile in the same hand. The teens at school often have bags on both arms (books in one plus sports bag) with nothing on the shoulder Confused

MamaLazarou · 14/08/2014 11:22

It's not the carrying it in the crook of the arm that looks so silly - it's the stupid limp claw-thing women do with their hand. It is known as 'Fashion Claw' in our house.

Beeyump · 14/08/2014 11:26

Flip's sake.

Squtternutbaush · 14/08/2014 11:31

I don't get handbags in general to be honest.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/08/2014 11:43

I gave up shoulder bags for a long time because of concerns about posture, back problems etc, but really needed hands-free capability once the DCs came along. I realised that ones with one long strap and the bag low down at hip level are generally much better for me than the sort where you have two medium length handles over your shoulder and the bag tucked behind/under your arm. With those I always had to lift that shoulder to stop the outer handle pinging off it, especially if the handles were shiny and/or round. Long strap ones seem to stay put on my shoulder without any hunching and you can put them across body to alternate shoulders and relieve the stress. However cross body doesn't look great on me as I am large of chest. Shoulder bags also tend to spoil the line of clothes to some extent.
