Can anyone tell me how warm they are. They look so thin and I can't imagine them being really warm in the depths of winter. Are they a very clever design or will I be shivering in Feb in chilly Yorkshire?

My DD has one (it folds up really tiny and I'm Envy because I didn't buy one)
She says it's toasty (but we're in Essex which is tropical compared to Yorkshire)
She's going ski-ing next year and is taking it as a layer , it has virtually no bulk (and she'll outgrow it soon)

CointreauVersial · 13/08/2014 23:28

Aren't they designed to be layered under another coat? I bet they are mega warm, though.

BringMeTea · 14/08/2014 01:40

I have 2! They are brilliant! Very warm and so light and scrunchable.

meltedmonterayjack · 14/08/2014 07:08

Thanks for the low down ( pardon the pun). I'm going to get one. If they're not warm enough I could wear it under something else. Didn't realise they were designed to be layered. I love the being scrunchable idea. Now I have to decide on the colour.

Surprisingly warm and pack up small.Sadly my zip broke after just a couple of months though and couldn't match the tricky colour. Great while it lasted Hmm

mysteryfairy · 14/08/2014 08:14

Surprisingly warm and uniqlo seem to sell out of and get no more of popular sizes/colours so fast if you want one you need to be decisive.

Wouldn't have put layers in top though. I do think that would look weird

dexter73 · 14/08/2014 08:18

They are great. I have a coat and a bodywarmer. Very good for layering under another coat when it is very cold or on their own when it is less cold.

MCSpammer · 14/08/2014 08:50

Can

MCSpammer · 14/08/2014 08:51

Can someone link please? I am always put off by bulky puffer types but envy the warmth so a sleeker one would be good.

MCSpammer · 14/08/2014 08:52

Right. uniqlo. Missed that in the title. I will google!

pennywenny · 14/08/2014 09:10

They are very fashionable here with 40 something mums. They are warm but don't like being wet.

Gillybobs · 14/08/2014 09:15

Quidco are offering 10% cash back on uniqlo purchases until Saturday.

Down jackets

AnnabelleDarling · 14/08/2014 11:26

I have been looking at the compact jacket for a while. Does anyone know what the sizing like? I'm usually a 10 in jackets

meltedmonterayjack · 14/08/2014 17:24

Gillybobs thanks for Quidco info. I didn't realise they'd sell out fast either. I tried one on when I was last in London (we don't have a branch here) and loved it but as it was April, I didn't get it. Can't remember what flipping size it was either, so if anyone can advise re how sizes come up that would be really great.

Are they very shiney?

pluCaChange · 14/08/2014 18:19

The jewel colours are a bit shiny, cherrypie, but the black is quite sober.

Go for the ones which have a 2-way zip, so you can allow them to flare out over Blush thighs and bottom.

46direct · 14/08/2014 21:13

Liking the uniqlo
Silly question
Whats the difference between the two ones that look almost the same?

BringMeTea · 15/08/2014 00:38

Size wise I am a 14 and large of chest. I get an xl. A small of chest 14 would be fine in l. Hope you can extrapolate!

AnnabelleDarling · 15/08/2014 11:00

Thanks BringMeTea Smile

florascotia · 16/08/2014 18:10

I don't want to sound depressing, but does eveyone KNOW about the down and feather industry?
See, for example gentleworld.org/how-down-feathers-are-collected/

Even IKEA appears to be against it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_feather

BringMeTea · 18/08/2014 06:39

Oh. I feel a bit sad now. I had seen Uniqlo were regarded as one of the more ethical clothing companies. I won't buy any more down jackets from them.

florascotia · 18/08/2014 09:53

Tea, I honestly don't know about Uniqlo's policy re down. My comment was just a general one. Perhaps it might be worth asking them?

This site is American, but might be helpful. Some of the brands it mentions are available here:
blog.hillmap.com/2013/10/companies-that-make-ethical-down.html

The trouble is that, without paying an absolute fortune, it's very hard to find clothes that are ethical, functional AND stylish. For heavy-duty outdoor gear, I am quite a fan of stuff called Thinsulate - it's light and warm can be used to quilt fairly flattering shapes. But all too often synthetic-insulation garments are just utilitarian or rather frumpey.

There are ethical fashion blogs, for example:
www.missbeaubangles.co.uk/ethical-style-ethical-coats-autumnwinter-201314/
and
ecoglamourista.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/eco-glamouristas-pick-ethical-winter.html
But I am deeply unstylish, and so I don't know whether they are any good.

John Lewis has a good policy re down in bedding www.johnlewis.com/inspiration-and-advice/john-lewis-policy-on-feather-and-down-products. Might be worth asking them about fashion items, also?

florascotia · 18/08/2014 09:54

'frumpey'??!! - that looks even frumpier than the correct spelling!

manofsponge · 18/08/2014 16:49

bah about the geese

THIS one is nice
