I have just bought a dress for my DB's wedding (in 2 weeks time! I had real wobbles about the dress I already had!!). Anyway Dsil to be has text me tonight telling me it is too much like the bridesmaid's dresses and could I wear a shawl or something so it looks further from them. I didn't even think about the colour of the bridesmaids dresses when I bought the dress, I just really liked it!!

This is the dress;

These are the shoes;

& this is my hat;

Please could someone suggest something to wear with it??? I have already got a vintage (ish) pearl brooch in same colours as hat & shoes but she wants something more.

Hope this works!

What a beautiful dress! What put you off the other dress? [nosy]

Hebburnisaplaceonearth · 12/08/2014 22:26

I think your sil is being precious! Would a jacket be an option?

temporaryusername · 12/08/2014 22:27

I can't see why it matters if it looks like the bridesmaids' dresses, but what would I know. It looks lovely, and the shoes.

SavoyCabbage · 12/08/2014 22:34

It's lovely. I don't see how it matters either, especially as you are wearing a hat.

LizR999 · 12/08/2014 22:40

Tricky!! Does she really want you to cover the top half of the dress up? If so you could go for a long sleeved shrug for as long as you can bear to in a bright electric blue, and swop shoes to match....what colour is your hair? Are you very pale skinned? Tempting to not change a thing as it all looks so lovely, but on a Brides special day.... let me know!

the other dress was a dark coloured maxi dress that I had bought for another occasion - it just didn't feel 'weddingy' - we don't have much spare cash & I decided (last weekend) that I wanted something I really liked! Got it all for just over £100, the 2 DDs are being flower girls, DS & DH are ushers, so we haven't had to spend any other money (other than the fact that I'm making their 4 tier cake which is costing us a fortune!!).

Also I have lost 1.5 stone this year and wanted something to show it off a bit I suppose! I am 5'6" with shoulder length brown hair, and now a 10/12!

Liz I think something like a long-sleeved shrug or pashmina would be fine, I can't afford to change anything I have so would going for a completely different colour (like the blue or a deep burgundy) be ok with it??

I suppose in a way, at least if it's chilly then I have something!!

I do think she's been a bit bridezilla, but she is normally lovely & I think it is just last minute panics so will allow her this one!!

It looks nothing like a bridesmaid dress.

Wear it, it's exactly the sort of thing other guests may turn up in.

LizR999 · 13/08/2014 08:09

I think you are being very kind. Depending on the venue setting - modern or traditional?? - than maybe go blue (modern) or burgundy (more traditional) and you will look fabulous. Such impressive weight loss - you must feel amazing!!

MrsSkinnyLegs · 13/08/2014 08:46

A delicate nude/ pink pashmina would be fine, match it to your accessories and drape it artfully around your shoulders. Done!

BiggerYellowTaxi · 13/08/2014 08:52

It's a shame she's thinking this way. All of your immediate family are directly involved in the wedding and you've made the cake, I think it'd be quite nice for you to look similar to but not the same as the wedding party. Luckily the dress is a nice simple shape so you can add a jacket, shrug or pashmina. I love the dress and you are going to look fab!

mignonette · 13/08/2014 08:59

I would go with a light jacket and take it off when you get there. Don't match the jacket to the shoes or dress, go for a cream colour, a cold cream like the hat. Maybe slightly cropped as its more modern.

You are going to look lovely in that outfit.

KristinaM · 13/08/2014 09:02

For someone who says in their thread title that they have no idea -you have put together a lovely outfit. Your dress will be perfect to show off your figure -congratulations on the weight loss

I agree with the suggestion of a nude or pale pink pashmina -you should be able to get one quite cheaply

I hope you all have a lovely time -make sure you get a photo of you and your DH and your children

I'm impressed by your cake making skills too -must be a lot of work

mignonette · 13/08/2014 09:25

I agree with Kristina and I should have said that in my post too.

Clarabum · 13/08/2014 12:17

It looks nothing like a bridesmaid dress. If anyone says anything then it'll be about the bridesmaids looking too much like guests. I got a lovely pashmina from amazon. this one and it's lovely. 100% cashmere and it's just gorgeous. It came within a week too.

beepbeep · 13/08/2014 12:58

thanks everyone, will have a look at those ideas
