Update - my black viscose jersey harems are now dry, and the previously-white stripe has come out a dark indigo rather than jet black. So it's still visible against the black of the trousers, but actually looks quite nice. Subtle, like.
I did the dye-stirring with an old black plastic cooking spoon, which was a bit grey around the edges. That came up splendidly.
