How do you build a capsule wardrobe?

I understand the principle of a capsule wardrobe and would love to have a number of items that I know all work together. But where do I start?
I buy something because I like it or need something for a specific event. But it rarely goes with anything else so I end up buying shoes or a cardigan or a necklace just to be able to wear the original item.
My brain just doesn't seem to think in a logical way that means I buy something knowing it will go with 2 or 3 other things in my wardrobe.
The end result is I have a lot of clothes but nothing to wear!

I think you do a wardrobe cull first, see what you have left to work with and go from there?? No expert but watching with interest as I really need to do this myself for autumn.

I think the main points are to (1) look for your own colour theme - a quick glance/sort out of your wardrobe will usually point to 2 or 3 of "your" colours.

Also (2) think of your lifestyle and the looks you want to achieve. A great way of finding your style (or the style you're aspiring to) is to look at pinterest. Flick through the looks and pin the ones you love. A quick look at your pins will tell you what makes you tick - try to shop within this look.

Finally, as Spammer said, cull the wardrobe of content that doesn't fit with your colours (except maybe one or 2 current pieces in a contrasting colour), lifestyle or look. This is very liberating and educational. You will usually find that you never wear that stuff anyway!

I second the liberating feeling Smile
I've recently had a huge cull of things that don't fit, aren't the right colour/shape/style etc. I now have fewer clothes but know that they all fit me, look ok and mostly co-ordinate together.
