Just read on another thread that apples have slopey shoulders and flat bums. I have broad shoulders and more of a round bum.

Have always followed advice on dressing apples but think now I may have been wrong.

Can't really tell from that photo. Apples are bigger on the shoulders and waists, and have slim legs. Hourglasses are relatively equal at hip and shoulder, with a smaller waist and pears are smaller on top with larger hips and thighs. Or that's how I think of it, anyway

Thanks Molly. There's more than just apple, pear and hourglass, though, isn't there? That's what I was wondering about..

I think trinny and Susannah came up with about 12 or something but they weren't really intuitive to me so I didn't pay any attention :)

You look more of an inverted triangle shape - broad shoulders and narrower hips. I'm a similar shape, and also have a splodgy stomach with little waist definition. I think you look great though, like you have more of a waist than me!

petalpowered · 06/08/2014 21:10

THanks jam, going to google inverted triangle..

Gosh you have a cracking figure and to die for legs. I can't actually see your shape properly from the angle of this photo - are your shoulders slightly wider than your hips! If so you're an inverted triangle (athletic figure). If you send me a front on pose I'll be able to tell much better. Am I allowed to give out my email address on here? Possibly not. So if you go onto my blog it's on there ([email protected]).

Whatever you are, that dress works for you, but you're definitely not an apple. Just keep buying what suits you. Apart from the extreme shapes, it's all a bit artificial, anyhow, as, much like colours, we tend to be dictated to by whatever's in the shops.

SlowlorisIncognito · 06/08/2014 22:41

Tbh, I think when you are thinner than a certain size, you might have a "shape" but the advice on "dressing for your shape" doesn't really apply. The "dress for your shape" works better for people with more body fat, where the shape is more extreme and there are more bad points to disguise.

With your body, you can probably pull off most styles of clothing, so just go with what you like and what works. If you try things on before buying (even if you buy a similar style online instead) you will soon be able to see if a certain style doesn't suit your body, or highlights areas you are insecure about.

Thanks for the advice - sludgebrown, I can't find any better photos but yes my shoulders are wider than my hips. Tbh I don't see my shape as athletic, or if it is it's american footballer or something - my shoulders and rib cage are really wide.

Have always tried to follow the advice on dressing an apple stuff but some of it has never, ever worked on me - for e.g. a wide belt is just awful on me and does the opposite of creating a waist.

Inverted triangle def sounds more like me.

Yep, this def sounds like 'inverted triangle'. Although I do think the whole 'body types' thing is a bit random, and only mildly helpful. (I though I was an apple forever, too, until I realised 'hourglass' was a thing)

petalpowered · 07/08/2014 10:23

Thanks all.

petalpowered that's probably because apples dress very differently to inverted triangles. Try bringing all the detail to your bottom half and minimise your top half to balance out your frame. A-line skirts are good as are loose patterned trousers. Don't wear wide necklines as this will only emphasise your shoulders. A neat v-neck or round neck is much better for you. They are the rules but you have such a good figure, I wouldn't worry too much.

petalpowered · 07/08/2014 18:47

Thanks sludgebrown - I've tended to wear a lot of A line skirts in the past. Never gone for loose, patterned trousers though. Will have a look.
