I've just dyed a pink dress blue but it's left bloody pink stitching!

Decided I didn't like the bright pink linen dress I bought myself so dyed it navy blue. Followed all the instructions, have dyed loads of stuff before. The dress label said 100% linen so I thought it'd be ok. But obviously the bloody stitching wasn't. It must have been polyester or something.

Have I ruined the dress? It's not that noticeable.

Is it going to look ridiculous?

I've used fabric pens with reasonable success on this before. Sharpie doesn't really take, as you've seen.

Such a PITA his stitching malarkey.

Madaboutthrows · 09/08/2014 19:51

Make it a style statement !

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/08/2014 22:45

Just checked my emails and the poly dye isn't due to come for another couple of weeks. Will see if I can get hold of a fabric pen or buy another bloody dress.

KristinaM · 14/08/2014 00:34

You can't buy another dress ! That's would be sensible giving in

KristinaM · 14/08/2014 00:35

Besides I want to laugh at your disasters empathise with your pain

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 14/08/2014 22:17

Gee, thanks. Grin

MrsLettuce · 15/08/2014 00:07

Don;t bother with the fabric pen! Sorry. Have just washed the dress I used it on for about the 6th time and, well, it just hasn't held up.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 21/08/2014 10:42

Hello, just to let you know the bloody dye still hasn't arrived, grr...

KristinaM · 21/08/2014 11:06

I've not been able to sleep with the excitement Grin

I've previously had success with a black laundry marker pen. It's designed not to wash out and has covered polyester thread.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 24/08/2014 20:05

Well.

I've just dyed the dress.

Boiled for over half an hour. Yes, it does stink. Chucked it in the machine afterwards as per instructions, took it out and hung it up and...

You can't see the stitching anymore!

Hurrah!

I'll post a picture tomorrow when it's dried and I can have a proper look.

Incidentally I've washed the pan out with boiling water and fairy liquid, and also had it boiling away on the hob with washing powder in - fail safe pan cleaner that DMil taught me, cleans anything off any pan. Will I be able to use it to cook in again? It's the only big metal pan I've got.

RussTDaviesBear · 24/08/2014 20:12

You could try machine- washing it with a dark blue uniqlo silk cardigan that's only meant to be hand-washed.

I don't know what kind of dye it had in it, but it turned the synthetic stuff that was in the machine with it blue, while leaving all the cotton bits untouched.

KristinaM · 24/08/2014 20:26

Well done with the dress . Look forward to photo

Dunno about the pan sorry

Is there a [smug] emoticon?

Or a [quite relieved] one? Grin

I'm very impressed, it looks good from here

Wishing you some nice weather so you can wear it this weekend

KristinaM · 26/08/2014 05:07

Can you please tell me the cost of the two dyes ? I'm trying to work out if the double dye thing would be cost effective for some items I have

TIA

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/08/2014 09:58

Thanks Kris Smile

The original machine dye was a box of Dylon and I think it was about a fiver from my local hardware shop. The poly dye was called iDye and it was £3.86 from Amazon.

My dress was originally £45. Postage was four quid so altogether it cost me nearly sixty quid. Confused

Expensive mistake! I know I don't like bright colours.

Kablooger · 26/08/2014 10:26

oh i LOVE dyeing. we had a whole thread on it last week. Dylon black is great for cotton trousers.

avoid polyester stitching!

Dontgotosleep · 26/08/2014 10:39

It is noticeable but it just looks like part of the dress.

KristinaM · 26/08/2014 12:21

Thanks for the stats . But if you spent £9 to rescue a dress that you would otherwise not have worn , you might feel that's money well spent

I can't believe that you didn't dye anything else at the same time. I can never resist searching for random t shirt /scarves that might be improved by some dye Grin

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/08/2014 13:09

Yeah I should have done.

Compared to what it did look like Dontgotosleep it's not noticeable at all. Grin
