Wedding guest dress code

Can anyone advise on,

  1. If you are going to a daytime service/meal with black tie evening do, would you definitely change outfits? Or would you consider changing but keep an eye out for something that could work for both?
  1. Is it true that red is not a great colour for a guest dress? I only recently heard this. I was thinking that for the evening dress at least red or black would be ok, that any issues would be more with red or black for the daytime part...

Thanks!

What does the invitation say? Exactly, I mean. There are people who specifically want people in black tie in day too Confused

Red. Not a problem, I'd say. Assuming it's reasonably demure.

Thanks Mrs Lettuce

Dress code for daytime is smart. Lounge suits for men.

How very, very demanding!

I would want to change outfits (or at least appearances) with a dress code like that but, yeah, there practical and financial considerations. Blimey.

Thanks Mrs Lettuce, just had the invite and it is in November so I think I'll wait and see if inspiration strikes or I see something that will do for all day. Otherwise will change, also issues re cold at that time of year to consider for daytime!

I think red is always fine for a wedding

And black evening / cocktail dress is also fine for a black tie evening do

Black day wear does tend to look like you should be at the office or a funeral and is generally unsuitable

For a November wedding I would wear smart day dress and coat for the day, and change into cocktail dress for the evening .

Don't you have a dress from past Christmas functions etc that would work for the evening? For some reason, they don't seem to date as quickly as day wear . Or are you looking for an excuse to buy something new ?

Thanks KristinaM. I do have something that might be suitable for the evening, but having tried it on yesterday am not sure it looks good at all - it is one of those dresses that supports the bust, but by squashing you into a slightly weird shape. Still, it is a back up option, I did have an evening dress I really loved that would have been ok but sadly it has been gradually unravelling and is a bit beyond repair.

Thanks for the advice re red, I'm glad you both think it would be ok, and black for the evening. I agree about black in the day not being the ideal.
