Avon Skin So Soft as a mozzie repellant?

Petal02 · 04/08/2014 15:01

We're shortly heading off on our hols, and quite a few people have mentioned that Avon Skin So Soft is far more effective (and far nicer to use) than Jungle Formula.

Has anyone tried this?

OP posts:
Pastperfect · 04/08/2014 15:04

Yes use it all the time and have done for many years.

Tis good stuff.

PearlsAndLace · 04/08/2014 15:04

We used it on a recent trip to the west coast of Scotland and it worked very well. Never tried Jungle Formula so cant compare though.

ThisIsShe · 04/08/2014 16:06

It's the only stuff we use (we're plagued by midges where we live).

Apparently it was discontinued years ago and was only started again when the army pointed out that it's what they use to keep the midges etc away. No idea if that's an urban myth or not, but it is bloody good stuff. Smells amazing too.

Shia · 04/08/2014 16:20

Yes it works. It's also a lovely dry oil for nourishing your skin.

AmethystMoon · 04/08/2014 16:59

Which one is it please? I've seen blue and pink and I think different products too in that range.

TallulahBetty · 04/08/2014 17:28

It's the pale green one (sorry, not sure what 'flavour' that is)

IScreamForIceCream · 04/08/2014 17:31

It's good against Scottish midgies, but please don't think it would keep you safe in a malarial area - it wont.

showtunesgirl · 04/08/2014 17:32

The only thing that works for me is this stuff called Incognito. You can now get it from Holland and Barrett.

Absolutely nothing else works for me as I have very sweet blood.

Shia · 04/08/2014 17:50

It used to be called woodland, I think. Now it's just the green one.

WilburIsSomePig · 04/08/2014 17:59

It's the original dry oil spray NOT the pink one.

Djangor · 04/08/2014 18:12

I've used Smidge from www.midgeforcast.co.uk. Not so oily as the Avon one & easier to use.

CarbeDiem · 04/08/2014 18:27

I never use anything else and I mostly live somewhere that has lots of mozzies, albeit not a place that's high risk for malaria . It's brilliant and leaves your skin soft too.

It's the green dry oil spray. Used to be called woodland fresh.

GypsyFloss · 04/08/2014 18:29

Using it at the moment in Spain and it seems to be very effective. It was 4 bottles for a tenner from Avon a couple of weeks ago. It's the pale blue/ green bottle.

Kundry · 04/08/2014 18:34

Depends where you go on holiday - in a malarial area you need DEET and lotions without DEET are not adequate.

StoneTheFlamingCrows · 04/08/2014 19:23

Omg will it really work in a non-malarial area?!

I was eaten alive in India (in the mountains and no malaria there) and in Italy and it made my life a misery as I really reacted badly to them - I looked like the elephant man!

Jungle formula irritated my skin even further - though if I applied it it did stop me getting new bites.

Does it really really work? I literally got about 100 bites my first night in Italy so they REALLY love my blood.

If it does I will buy a truckload

CarbeDiem · 04/08/2014 19:50

For many people it does Stone.
I don't use deet because it makes me have a reaction, I've got eczema and sensitive skin (although I'd have to in a area with high risk malaria)

I cover myself in it after my evening shower and also carry it in my bag to top up if I go out.
I also spray my mozzy curtain with it too to deter the feckers from coming into my apartment.

showtunesgirl · 04/08/2014 20:42

Not true Kundry!

Incognito which I recommended above does not contain DEET and is recommended by the Institute of Tropical Diseases for use in areas with malaria.

temporaryusername · 04/08/2014 20:54

I've used in Europe in destinations where I usually get lots of bites, and have escaped with the odd one or two...for me that is a result! I would say go for it, I used it in the evening as a body lotion to prevent bites overnight.

LittleOldWineDrinker · 04/08/2014 21:07

We're off to Scotland later this month and this has been recommended to us too. But I've just had a look on the avon site and can't work out which one it is.

TallulahBetty · 04/08/2014 21:10

I think it is this one (they seem to have repackaged it since I last bought some)

LittleOldWineDrinker · 04/08/2014 21:39

Brilliant - thank so much Tallulah

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 04/08/2014 21:43

They sold it on the isle of mull tourist info place, midges hate it. But not for malarial places-horrible deet.

MuttonCadet · 04/08/2014 21:45

Excellent, I've been recommended this, but I wasn't sure which it was.

todayisnottheday · 04/08/2014 21:46

We use it for the horses and it is excellent but you must keep in mind it's oil based so be aware of the sun and be ultra vigilant about suncream (especially for dc) you can definitely see the increased effect on the horses.
