we're going away to North Wales area with two toddlers in middle of August, impossible to fly with them so decided on a local trip. Can you suggest what clothes would be suitable to wear for the beach and general days out? Any advice???

well, I live just near the border and have been known to visit the beach here, so....

the temperatures here are generally a degree or two less than the southeast, but there really isn't much in it. (this was well researched before coming to live here!) There is much less pollution and often a clearer sky so slap on the suncream.

The weather is just as unpredictable as the rest of the UK so pack in layers; get them t-shirts, a fleece or two, a sunhat, sunglasses, decent toddling shoes :-) and a raincoat. The coast will probably be breezy and if you are going up any hills it will obviously be chillier there. There are some microclimates; for instance the Clwydians round Ruthin (where I used to live) are a dry bit and a sun trap.

but we aren't expecting snow in August.

enjoy.

It can be a real mixed bag so I agree go with layers, rain macs are handy to have. We had some very hot days so don't forget sun cream. We mostly spent our days in shorts and t shirts and just popped on fleeces and hoodies if it got a bit breezy.

PIL live in N Wales (we live in the SE) and depending on which bit you go to, you can expect it to be windy so windproof/warm things are a must. The N Wales coast has a bit of a micro climate and Anglesey has been said to have the mildest climate in Britain so don't expect it to be cold but it can be wet but then the West side of the country usually gets more rain than the East.

You can't really go wrong with layers. That is what we will be packing when we go up in August. We go in August most years and usually we use all different types of clothing over the course of a week.Smile

If you're heading to the beach I'd consider wetsuits for your DC (unless they're only going to be paddling), with towelling hoodies or similar for when they come out of the sea.

For the rest of the time I agree with everyone else - layers. Shorts and t shirts, warm jumpers for windy days and evenings, and a waterproof coat.

specialsubject · 04/08/2014 15:36

ps currently in boardshorts and bikini top....but forecast for later in the week is fleece and raincoat!

Outforanotherwalkbitch · 04/08/2014 20:47

I live in North Wales. Wetsuits are essential, as are wellies. We do get the very occasional heatwave though, so bring some warm weather stuff. What I 'm basically saying is; be prepared for anything Smile Smile

oh wow didn't realize it may be chilly as well, thanks everyone for the heads up, will have to pull out the raincoats and cardigans as london has been quite warm these.past few weeks!

We recently went to NW Wales. None of us needed anything more than a light top over our t-shirts/sleeveless dresses at that was just one evening when we got home at desk in torrential rain. Take a waterproof because if it does rain you'll need it but I was on the beach in the evening in a sun dress. I even went swimming in a bikini in the sea in the late afternoon sunshine and I am not known for being at all hardy.

Towelling hoodies for the beach, sun hats and usual swimming costumes if the weather continues. If you get weather like we had you'll feel like a boiled ham in a wetsuit Grin

We're Londoners btw.

I live near Caernarfon in North Wales and the weather has been glorious up until the last week. Really hot. The last week we have had lots of rain. I actually wore a pair of suede biker boots with a summer dress and cardi last week cause it was a bit cold but also wore flip flops on another day.

BigBoobiedBertha · 05/08/2014 14:24

Hi Milly. How are you? Hope all is well on your mountain. Smile

I always think of N Wales as a bit of '4 seasons in one day' sort of area. I know it has plenty of sunshine but if it has a mind to, it can change very quickly.

MillyDots · 05/08/2014 16:33

Hi BBB I'm good. Where have you been Smile missed you and your conversation.
Your spot on with the weather here but I love it.

specialsubject · 05/08/2014 17:17

it has been very warm here for the last few weeks too. Work on a degree or two lower than London, without the stuffy buildings.
