Didrikson coat

I'm not sure if these are frumpy or not! If I were a young woman I could get away with wearing them but as I'm nearly 50 I don't want to look frumpy!

I need a dog walking coat. Waterproof, preferably a two way zip, khaki preferably but would accept grey, black, beige.

A parka shape would be nice.

I'm looking now because there are sale prices on at the moment.

I'm not sure of sizing. I'm a ten but may need a 12 to wear jumper underneath?

Has anyone got a Didrikson coat, if so which model?

Or any alternative makes, please?

This would look very frumpy on me but I like the photo where you can't see the model

I've found a Taylor one.

Size 12 in purple or

Size 10 in navy

I like the navy more but I have no idea what their sizing comes up as.

I wear a ten but I am a woman not a girl and I've read reviews where they say the fit is tight on hips and loose on top!

Anyone?

I have a Seasalt Janelle coat and it's lovely, very warm and very waterproof. I don't think it's frumpy but then I tend to wear it places where frumpiness isn't on my mind...

Shia · 02/08/2014 18:13

Thank you for your reply. I will go and have a look.

At my age I have to be careful and yes I may be in the wilderness but I still have standards! Ha ha

You're still in your 40s, I'd hardly say "at my age" Hmm

Shia · 02/08/2014 18:15

I think that seasalt one would look awful on me. It's lovely but definitely not an old bats coat. :(

I am finding that there is a fine line between looking ok and looking horribly old/frumpy.

Strangely enough when I was young I wore twinsets and looked fab, now no way!

I've ordered the navy one.

If anyone else is interested I spent hours googling to get a good price/ colour and think this is an excellent price at £150.00 from Fife Country.

I have a navy Taylor which I bought last year. It's fab and I have never had such a brilliant winter coat - wind proof, waterproof and warm.

It looks good too in a Nordic way. The hood is excellent as it's all adjustable, so no more holding onto your hood.

Sorry can't help with sizing as I've packed my away.

WilburIsSomePig · 02/08/2014 19:16

I also have the Taylor and it's the warmest coat I've ever had. They're not cheap but worth every penny IMO.

OnlyLovers · 02/08/2014 19:22

These are fab.

Another Scandi label putting the UK to shame

Shia · 02/08/2014 21:00

Ooh I like both of those brands OnlyLovers.

Ilse Jacobsen - best stylish totally waterproof coarse rver. Can't do the link but def Google them

Minshu · 02/08/2014 22:37

I bought one in khaki nearly 2 years ago, and looking forward to wearing it again is one of the few things making the impending end of summer bearable! I'm a 12 in Next and bought a 12, which gives plenty of space for layers. Huge pockets and adjustable hood. Love it!

calonwyn · 02/08/2014 23:12

Love my Lindsay parka - really warm and not frumpy at all. I feel like a detective in it. The hood alone is worth the price; unlike every other parka I've owned that hood does not come down once there's a light breeze.

Watch out for the arms - apparently they're longer than we're used to. Swedes have long arms, it seems.

pixiegumboot · 02/08/2014 23:31

I have the naiomi. Love it. Looking for a smaller size for this winter. Warm as toast

SurfBoredCat · 02/08/2014 23:49

I agree about ilse Jacobsen. The coats are cut beautifully and I look feminine and shapely in mine here

I'd size down in the didriksons, I have one and they are very long in the arms too. Nice and toasty though!

spiderswilldescend · 03/08/2014 09:13

I think they are massively frumpy (and I'm old) - the parka ones aren't too bad, but the others look like the sort my mum and her friends used to wear to bingo years ago.

I got one last year after much humming and hawing - a parka one - and found one that was a bit brighter than most (blue). I'm a 12/14 and sized down - but there couldn't have been a size that would have fitted me in existence. It would have fitted someone twice my size - from what I remember, the chest measurement was 44" I think Confused.

Shia · 03/08/2014 10:09

I have long arms, thankfully!

Spiders, that is exactly what I'm worried about, I don't want to look frumpy.

I went for the Taylor as it seems to be a nice shape.

What is your blue one? I could have bought yours!

After wearing my mumsnet fav Merrel Wakefield fir the last three years, last winter I looked at these. I'm 41, 5 foot 7 and size 8/10 I looked like a womble in every one I tried on! I bought a beautiful navy one Joules but it wasn't waterproof. Almost bought one from North Face outlet was £229 I think but I felt as if I would need to go I a proper 'expadition' to wear it. In the end I bought two coat, a wax Barbour and a Artic something one, the newer warm and waterproof one. Bought in Spring in the sale with £100 off Wink

Shia · 03/08/2014 11:00

I looked at the Merrell Wakefield but I would look like a deflated jacket potato wearing it! It's horrible when you reach an age where some things just look horrible on you despite them being nice items of clothing!

Mine was purple and strangers would stop me to ask me about it!! Fantastic breathable waterproof coat with lovely long arms (for pram pushing!) and to wear over suit for work. Just got bored and finally lost the last bit if baby weight needed something smaller yippeeee!!

spiderswilldescend · 03/08/2014 11:52

My blue one was a Klara shia - I sent it back though. Colour was lovely, but you could have fitted a family of four in there . . .

Shia · 03/08/2014 12:55

My daughter is away at the moment and I've told her to email me links to waterproof coats so I can get her one as many are in the sales at the moment.

She is 16 and it will be interesting to see what she picks! I've told her that waterproof is essential now that we have got a dog.

Maybe if my one does come up big, we'll both get in it together! Ha ha
