Bridesmaid dress help

I am due to be bridesmaid for a Christmas wedding in December. As the only adult bridesmaid I have been told to choose my own dress -just has to be purple. I like a deeper plum purple (rather than bright) but can't find much online at the moment as lots of end of season pastels about. The dress doesn't have to be too bridesmaidy...the bride's dress is tea length so I would look silly in a full on gown stood next to her. I like the 50s full skirt shape and would be willing to spend a bit more to have something made.

Any pointers on either nice dresses in shops or places to have dresses made to measure? There seem to be tons of overseas sites offering made to measure bridesmaid dresses but I have no idea how reliable they would be.

I am a size 8/10, 5ft 7 and probably willing to spend up to 150ish.
Thanks

This with or without a petticoat Lady V Cadbury purple

newnameforanewstart · 02/08/2014 10:53

50´s style but a more vivid purple honeypie they also do purple petticoats if you want! Personally if the bride is in white / cream I would go for a petticoat to match if you want to wear one.

newnameforanewstart · 02/08/2014 10:57

This might look stunning purple one sleeved

50´s style again but a lower neck line and belted queenofholloway

newnameforanewstart · 02/08/2014 11:00

I know NOTHING about this company but this could look oh so stunning in a deep purple or aubergine which they seem to offer Made to measure

I also have to throw this in as I love the 50´s style coat dresses and would be great for a winter wedding because of the arm coverage 50´s style coat dress

Don´t worry about the 50´s style if you don´t have an hour glass figure that's what petticoats were made for they give everyone an hour glass figure!

Love the queen of Holloway one

The queen of Holloway one looks ever so much like a cheapy copy of the Eliza J one. It obviously isn't (both variations on a classic theme) but thin cotton surely isn't really right for a winter bridesmaid gig Confused

newnameforanewstart · 02/08/2014 11:13

Mewkins

This was a friends wedding in 2012.

The dresses really did look stunning worn with black petti coats which might be a little unusual but it looked amazing on the day. They are very similar to the Queen of Holloway one only made out of satin and halter neck

BTW I know my friend won´t mind me sharing these as they are on the internet anyway!

The queen of hollow way one is a great shape though and easy to make. A good ish seamstress could make one in the same style out of any type of fabric its more about the shape and style and No I am not sure that a cotton is the right type of fabric for a winter wedding, but remember you can also team any dress with a stole, shawl or even a cape.

MrsLettuce · 02/08/2014 11:29

VoH does dresses a lot like newnameforanewstart posted. Lovely!

mewkins · 02/08/2014 11:46

Yes agree, the fabric needs to be heavier for a winter wedding. I really like the honeypie boutique audrey style. In fact I have a red dress very similar. I think the bride is tracking down a local seamstress so I guess I could ask her whether she could copy the style. I have a five wk old baby and although almost back to normal would be handy to have a couple of fittings as my shape changes!

Newname, those dresses at your friend's wedding look fab!

MrsLettuce - I think that might have been the company Silver belts though.

Was going to suggest this company too Purple 50´s style for some reason on my computer today I to click the zoom button to get the photos up. I have used her before and she makes lovely dresses and has been happy to make them in different types of fabric so you can always contact her if you wanted satin or something else

Just to put something different into the pot, French lace in a more wiggle style

StormCloudsGathering · 02/08/2014 14:27

Dig For Victory? I haven't used them personally but they look lovely online, lots of variation on the shape you like. You could have one custom made I think within your budget? They don't have any royal purple ones up at the minute but they have this in their fabric section so you may be able to get one made up?

mewkins · 02/08/2014 20:27

Thanks- the dig for victory site looks great!
