Gel vs. shellac nails

Is there any difference? Some of what I've read says that shellac is better for your nails as sometimes the gel makes your nails dry.

I had gel done for the first time and I'm happy enough but I've found a new manicurist who offers both gel and shellac, so wondered what I'd go for next time. Any thoughts please? :)

That's really interesting. Within the industry there is a lot of focus on recognised training, insurance etc but it's interesting to know what people look for when choosing a salon.

Good grief. Surely no reputable salon uses a drill? Mine certainly doesn't!

I have gels and chose the salon on the basis of the same recommendation from several people, and I in turn recommend my lady to loads of people as she is completely fab. And she doesn't drill my nails!

Having drills is fine because drilling the enhancement can be a a good time saver. Using the electric file on the acrylic or gel can be great for shaping. But using this tool on your nail bed you are going to take off way too many layers of nail when all it needs is to be slightly roughened and the shine removed which can be done with a fine grit hand file.

I have Shellac and it lasts a lot longer than any sort of gel on my nails. I've had OPI and Jessica and both lift and peel really quickly on me.

I would never, ever let anyone near my nails with a drill! It's definitely not needed with anything I've used.

I've now had 2 shellac manicures and both have chipped. The first time, it chipped after 13 days but I was having them re-done the next day, so I wasn't fussed. Now I have a chip after 2 days. Not happy!
