ok - the challenge - I have been invited to an old college friend's 50th birthday party. he is a hugely successful hedge fund manager - there are party organisers - so whilst I've no idea what the party is costing I think it's fair to assume it will be a lot. And I think the party guests are likely to be a wealthy bunch. I realise that this is very shallow of me but I think that I've also been reasonably successful (if not at the same financial level as my friend) and I want to show off too.

So, I need a new dress. I think the women there are likely to be a mix of old friends and trophy wives. I don't want to be frumpy but nor do I want to risk the mutton dressed as lamb look - so what do I wear?

I am 5 foot 4, size 8, fair skin and highlighted light brown hair. I am not particularly constrained by budget - but don't know where to start looking.

any suggestions? I'm in London so can get to a reasonable range of shops.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Have you thought about using a personal shopping service? I can highly recommend Liberty's. You do a trawl round the store with a stylist and pick out things that appeal; she will suggest things as she gets a clearer idea of your style; then you retire to your own (enormous) fitting room to try everything on while she scurries around bringing you tea and different sizes. She will also help you with accessories etc. Minimum spend is £1000 but that sounds as though it should be OK for you.

Is he paying, noddy?

If so, it would be rude not to... Wink

noddyholder · 02/08/2014 13:09

I think he felt that all my online mates must have a lot more £ than me and felt sorry for me Said take it from savings :) I never would pay that for a dress I would feel the same in a cheaper one if I loved it

That's very sweet Smile

Christ, please don't tell him I'm not rich Grin

I have never paid that much for a dress, as I've never had that much disposable income. But if I had, I bloody would.

If it was just a drop in the ocean I might

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/08/2014 14:33

Mmmm, not sure I could, even if I was loaded - must be my Yorkshire ancestry!

tethersend · 02/08/2014 14:35

I'm from Yorkshire stock too, Remus- what's my excuse? Grin

I absolutely could if I had the money. But I don't. So I hang out in style and beauty and wait for posters who do. I particularly enjoy evening wear and cocktail dresses.

One day lemon, one day this will all be yours...
