I did the last proper wash last monday with clarifying shampoo then a low sulphate wash (naked curl shampoo) on Wednesday, I've been co-washing every other day since with naked curl conditioner and using the u.gianni curl gel/naked curl cream to style but my hair is starting to feel greasy. I've been scrubbing my scalp and have 2b 2c hair from the chart. is this just a phase?

Im watching with interest. I havent been co-washing but been doing conditioner-little shampoo-conditioner. Cant bare the thought of not washing my hair as im scared it will feel limp and greasy and give me an itchy scalp. Also drying my hair in an old tee!!!

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 27/07/2014 10:19

What is co-washing?

Greengardenpixie · 27/07/2014 10:27

Washing with just conditioner as opposed to shampoo

MuscatBouschet · 27/07/2014 10:29

Co-washing = conditioner washing. I tried it for a few weeks but never got on with it. Didn't suit my hair. Can't remember what hair type I am - pretty thick soft curls/waves.

I'm back to SLS free shampoo.

Greengardenpixie · 27/07/2014 10:35

well imo even SLS is a complete marketing scam. I used it and it made no difference to my hair i have to say. I have used shampoo with sulphates for 46 years...the only difference to my hair now is i am dying it to get rid of the grey and that is why its dry and knackered looking. They grey is also coarser.
I reckon that most people find a difference with sulphate free is because they stop using other products. I dont tend to use products on my hair because they make my hair 'dirty' quicker...hence why the sulphate free made no difference.
Tell me im wrong and i will eat my words lol!! :)

pinkflaming0 · 27/07/2014 10:39

Genuine question here - what is the objective of co-washing/sulphate free?

fackinell · 27/07/2014 10:49

Never heard of it, only clicked to see if it meant washing your hair with your child. Grin

Greengardenpixie · 27/07/2014 10:53

to stop the frizz in hair..particularly for dry hair types.
hee hee ... cowashing washing hair with child..makes sense...like co-sleeping!

pinkflaming0 · 27/07/2014 10:54

Lol fackinell!

TheTrashheapHasSpoken · 27/07/2014 10:59

I only clicked onto it for the exact same reason, fack!

fackinell · 27/07/2014 11:01

Great silly minds, TrashHeap Grin

BravePotato · 27/07/2014 11:02

I think any products containing silicone make hair greasy.

Silicone is actually bad for hair, but short term gives the illusion of smoothness.

Cutting out silicone products, just using gentle shampoo and conditioner (silicon free!) means I only have to wash my hair twice a week now.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 27/07/2014 11:05

I can't get on with the 'Naked' range at all, too heavy for my hair and that's really thick and wavy.

Am now trying out the Rainforest range after reading about it here, seems better already, washed hair yesterday and it's still curly today

SanityClause · 27/07/2014 11:14

I assumed it had something to do with sharing bathwater, as well, fackinell and *Trash Blush

strawberrysplit · 27/07/2014 12:27

Ha! can see where the confusion with co-washing is coming from. I tried some of the hair forums and it's like reading another language!

The whole point of me trying it is to try and calm my frizz, nothing else has worked, frizz ease, Moroccan oil, pure argon oil, deep treatments etc etc.

My other option is that amazon Brazilian treatment but i'm wary of it thanks to my fine, easy damaged hair.

Jenny, maybe the rainforest range would be better for me then, my hair's quite fine but i'd say I have a normal amount of it. I'll persevere for a bit longer and maybe switch if it doesn't get any better.

Strawberrysplit, I think the naked curl conditioner has silicon in it - I low poo and recently bought the naked conditioner but found that my hair feels really clogged up and grungy. I had a look at the ingredients and found a form of dimethicone in the list. I haven't been brave enough to ditch shampoo yet but from what I've read could the naked conditioner but too rich to use as a co-wash?

dottytablecloth · 27/07/2014 13:36

But isn't the reason it feels greasy is that you aren't cleaning it? Confused

Meglet · 27/07/2014 13:42

There was an article in Grazia this week about co-washing. They mentioned one cheap co-wash conditioner on the market, Palmers Olive Oil IIRC. I really wanted to try Grow Gorgeous, but I can't afford 19 really in the first place, let alone for a product that might not be all that great.

I tried Naked shampoo once and it trashed my hair.

Deverethemuzzler · 27/07/2014 13:49

I do this most days but only because I have very short blonde (hi lift tint) hair. I don't wash it because its dirty. I do it because it makes it easy to style and I put the conditioner on because its heavily processed.

I use an ordinary but decent conditioner like Dove etc.

I will often only use conditioner on the DC's hair. They have mixed race hair and need the moisture rather than the cleaning.

JennyOnTheBlocks · 27/07/2014 14:01

dotty, my hair felt greasy to the ends after about 36hrs, and lately i've hardly been active at all, i was using more and more shampoo (and conditioner for the ends) to clean my hair, but nothing made it feel better

then i thought, how come my face isn't greasy, it's all the same skin, in fact if anything my skin is dry

switched to the Rainforest products and it's changed quite literally overnight

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 27/07/2014 14:08

I have short, greeting, dyed hair. I only need to wash it about once a week with bog standard shampoo.
I think the less you wash it, the less often it needs washing.

Ememem84 · 27/07/2014 14:09

I'm going to try this towards the end if the summer. My usually unruly hair has taken on a new life of its own at present. It's still thick but have given up using hair dryer as it's just too hot. And not straightening it. Hair looks carefree and beachy (although that may simply be because I've spent a lot of time in the sea recently...).

MamaLazarou · 27/07/2014 14:53

Dottytablecloth: cowashing does clean the hair - just not with lather.

I have used the Palmers Olive Oil cowash mentioned upthread and I don't rate it. I find it weighs the curls down and is quite drying. Cheap, though!

The best cowash I have found is As I Am coconut cowash (from Paks or Amazon). It smells wonderful but the smell doesn't linger on your hair. It leaves your hair super squeaky clean and shiny. About £10 for a big pot (about a month's supply).

I have been cowashing for a while and have yet to find an ordinary conditioner that leaves your hair clean enough. I really can't recommend the As I Am product enough. All I need is a tiny bit of Lush R+B afterwards.

Beware of using leave-in Argan/Moroccan oil products as they often contain a lot of silicones which build up and weigh the hair down.

It's definitely worth sticking with cowashing, IMO: I will never go back to shampoo now, my hair is tons healthier.
