Interview wear these days

So I the past I would have always worn a suit to am interview. I feel now though that suits on women are a bit outdated for interviews (unless it's a very top end job) would you agree and if so what's a viable alternative?

I wore a suit to my last one (and got the job) although I don't wear one at work on a daily basis.

I am a Sales Manager and figured I would rather look too smart than having them wondering whether they would be happy for me to represent their company.

I guess it depends on which job you are going for and in which industry.

I always make sure I show some personality if I have to wear a suit; interesting jewellery or scarf, bag etc.

It depends on what the job is.

itsnothingoriginal · 25/07/2014 22:05

Does depend on the job. I wore a linen shift dress for my interview last week and was glad I did as was so hot! Was an internal post though and we are not expected to be suited and booted where I work..

ThisBitchIsResting · 25/07/2014 22:54

Dress and jacket.

Stokey · 25/07/2014 23:03

I tend to wear a dress to the first and suit to the second. I think I read somewhere you should cdress above the post in interviews, so go smarter than you think.

grumblepuss · 26/07/2014 10:05

I've been wearing smart 7/8th trousers and a sleeveless shirt.
I've had the jacket with me but it's been too hot to wear it.
The people who have been interviewing me haven't been wearing a jacket either.

amyhamster · 26/07/2014 10:12

I wore a navy dress from next to my last one
Didn't get it though
I dont think they care so much what you wear , more what you say
I hate fricking interviews, the preparation , the researching, the practising, I prepared for 2 weeks for my last one , bought new outfit etc
All for nothing
Sorry rant over Grin

For a recent first round interview I wore a knee length navy shift dress and a cream cropped jacket/blazer and for the second round, I wore navy cigarette pants and a silky print shirt.

I don't think you necessarily need to wear a suit but IMO it's important not to flash too much skin (so dress/skirt at least to the knee and no bare shoulders)

Also I wouldn't wear anything too 'loud' or trendy (unless it was a particularly creative type job) but at the same time I think it's good to show a certain degree of personality (so I wouldn't wear anything completely plain like black trousers, plain white shirt)

Good luck!

Ps wear something comfortable! There's nothing worse than heels you struggle to walk in or a hemline you are constantly tugging down. Also factor in the weather - I automatically discounted a mint green silky blouse as I get huge sweat patches in it when it's hot!

moomin35 · 28/07/2014 16:10

I was going to wear fitted 7/8 black trousers and smart flat shoes was just struggling for the top half ...

I would definitely not wear anything sleeveless. A dress and jacket or skirt and mismatched jacket, or cigarette trousers and a jacket all fine, whilst not full-on suits.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 28/07/2014 17:12

I just go in my work clothes, which are smart but not a suit. Thinking back, the last interview I did I was wearing a red just-above-the-knee skirt and a grey tank top with a smart grey cardie. And heels. And I got the job.
