Do these kits work or will I end up like a stripy tiger?
I dyed my hair on Saturday "warm dark brown, to cover up first greys" before going out and it looks lovely. I also bought, but didn't have time to use, one of those home highlighter kits with the wand. Now that I'm really pleased with my overall hair colour should I risk using this kit and spoiling it all? Will the multitude of other underlying colours show through? Help!

If it's one of the ones where you put bleached blonde on, then avoid it. If it's one of the all in one kits with toning highlights (L'oreal I think, red box? mascara like wand) IME they ahve always given great results.

I posted about this a while back and wasn't brave enough to go through with it in the end

It is a Garnier kit with a mascara wand thing.

try a little bit first, without going the whole hog! i tried it on my hair and the highlighting thing made my hair orangey so i didn't use it.

you will go tangerine if it really blonde

Don't think I'll risk it. Don't fancy having to go to the hairdressers with an orange stripy mop and asking them to sort it out .

I would honestly recommend having your hair professionally coloured. This is after years of experience (and expense getting it sorted out!) of mistakes. Am a recent convert to 'hairdressers only' for colour and have never regretted it.

I'm another one who believes hairdressers only for colour. Have never been brave enough to do it myself but would rather pay a bit more & have it done well. Hairdressing colleges tend to be good - ok they're not fully trained yet, but they are very well supervised & instructed.

I have had mixed results with these.

I did my friends hair with one and it looked lovely, but my mum did mine the other day and it was meant to be chocolate brown all over with a hint of golden highlights but what I actually got was brown hair on the bottom with ginger on the top.....awful.

Thankfully my mum redyed it for me the other night, so now I just have plain chocolate brown LOL.

I think I will stick to hairdressers only for anything more complicated than a plain semi-permanent. The ginger and brown combo is exactly what I'm worried about happening.
