No help, but bumping and watching too... I have this issue - top inch is mousey brown, bottom is going a lovely brassy orange blonde...

I had a semi-permanent colour put on mine once my roots where about halfway down my hair. It was the same shade as my natural colour and helped to disguise the colour difference.

I agree out the roots for a good few months and kept it tied back so it wasn't quite as obvious. Then I chopped off my hair to my jaw line (so more than half of it) so it was basically one third natural colour and two thirds highlights. Then when it got to my shoulders I cut it again so it was just over half natural. For the last stage I got a semi colour put on just the highlighted leftovers to blend it into my hair.

It was sad to have to cut off so much hair but it was so damaged I did myself a favour in the long run. If doing it again I would cut off less the second time around (I had an awful hairdresser) so keep a little more of the length and put the semi colour on a bit more hair.

But on the other hand it is nice to know that only the last couple of inches are damaged now and the rest is in such great condition!

I've never regretted growing my highlights out! Now is a good time to do it as your hair grows faster in the summer!

GREW OUT

I grew my highlights out when I was pregnant. I was sick of the upkeep and used pregnancy as an excuse. It was a bit rubbish for a while. But once it grew to my chin length everyone started raving about how my ombre style was brill and asking if I had it done. It was worth it in the end. I have taken a good few inched of the bottom too which helps. I didn't do a semi permanent colour because of pregnancy that might help in the early stages.

Oh just a thought I also had less blonde highlights put in the last few times I did it. That way I had a sort of graduated colour rather than a line. May start with reducing your highlights,

You could buy a home highlighting kit, one of the hand painted ones, to add a few very far apart at the roots. Then aim to grow it into an ombré type affair?

I bought the John Frieda Foam hair dye in my natural colour, and just dyed over them. Worked really well.
