Why do women cover their arms?

I was out at a restaurant tonight and people-watching as usual. I had a bit of an epithany that covering your arms if you don't like them is completely the wrong thing to do. I saw women with untoned arms in vest tops, and to me they looked great. Ive come to the conclusion that you should rock your arms, no matter what they look like. I truly think it doesnt make any difference to onlookers. I can say that i have never in my life thought to myself that a woman should have covered her arms.

I do wear capsleeves though.

It's the waxing palava of my arms & underarms that I cant be arsed with doing regularly which stops me from wearing sleeveless tops.

I have very hairy arms thanks to my dad.

I know quite a few young slim attractive girls who cover their upper arms and shoulders for religious reaons (Christian, not Muslim, who I understand cover their entire arms?).

ElephantsNeverForgive · 19/07/2014 12:29

My upper arms and shoulders are likely to be beneath a T shirt on a hot day, because I burn really easily.

Never worried about showing them in an evening. They are furry, they have always been furry, who cares.

I cover mine most of the time as I have tattoos on and people can be snobby about them, but really I shouldn't give a fuck I know (especially as its completely my choice)

I am reformed arm coverer.

I used to dodge through the summer being overweight, self concious and easily burnt I would cover up.

Since getting to this age and 'stuff' I too got a point where I thought stuff it. I need to wear some nice clothes that are comfortable in the heat for ME.

I have been even more daring this year and wore vest tops, off shoulder dresses. I too am at the point where I have realised about a lot of things not just arms that no one cares, and if they judge like that they not very nice.

Have to say Im not wuite there with my legs yet when I think about it but I put that down to bad habits and cba de fuzzing every two days.

Dexter - I know, but women do have lower temperatures on average in their extremities than men do - probably why they report feeling the cold more than men do. So I think being more disposed to feel cold is part of it. Self consciousness is a big part of it too though.

ppeatfruit · 19/07/2014 14:51

In restaurants there's often A.C. so they're cold enough to cover up sometimes. If I go bare armed I do take a shawl or whatever.

I hate the sun ( I just go red and burn despite sun cream which I'm also allergic to so I can't win). so I cover up outside. My arms are toned though and I'm in my early 60s i do some exercises for them and they work.

I do wear a gentle fake tan on my arms, I never exfoliate, I'm not dark or hairy though Grin, just moisturise extravagantly which makes a lot of difference.

GhettoFabulous · 19/07/2014 20:21

I have nice arms but always cover them. I burn very easily.

Fairylea · 19/07/2014 20:29

I'm an arm coverer.

In the last few years I've gone from a size 10 to a size 16-18 due to various things and I can cope with the rest of me but my arms seem so big and almost butch - I just absolutely hate them. Even in this hot weather I've been wearing shrugs and cardis on top of my dresses etc.

One day maybe I won't. I don't know.

ygritte · 19/07/2014 20:57

saurus72.....buy the dress if you can afford it! And think about the cover later (28 days returns policy if you really can't sort anything out...you know it will be gone soon)
Apologies to my child for the half-hijack.....I have been varying sizes/states of fitness and have lots of dermo stuff to cover and now can really say that I don't give a monkey's. I'm happier in summer wearing less clothing and maybe people around me are happier that I'm less concerned. Aging is a wondrous thing!

I have a photo of me, at my slimmest (circa 8.5 stone) dressed for a wedding in a cap sleeved silk dress. I have another almost identical photo where I am wearing the matching cardigan and in look about 2 dress sizes smaller with my upper arms hidden. It looks better therefore I cover them, I don't care what other people think but I do care how I feel.
