I NEED to stop washing my hair with regular shampoo. I know my hair and scalp would thank me for it. I did it with my ds but what i do now is wash it with a body shop silicone free shampoo about once a week and it looks absolutely gorgeous for it (he had really bad cradle cap that initially only coconut oil massage would shift)

Has anyone done this?

What did you do? Conditioner only wash? Baking soda? Just washed it very infrequently.

Fwiw my hair is just passed shoulder length, thick and quite straight.

Marking place as I'm interested in this...not sure how it would work with my fine hair which tends to get greasy quickly

From what I gather I think you go a transition period where your hair looks a bit skanktastic but then the promise land on the other side is shiny, manageable locks fit for a goddess. I have a portfolio of updos up my sleeve that I HOPE will get me through the grease stage.. but this is where I fell down the last time I tried this.

I tried it for about 4 months but never left the skanktastic phase so I went back to using shampoo and my hair looked so much better!

I'm a bit of a novice on this subject, but from lurking on previous threads I have worked out my own system.

I use a lush shampoo bar, which as far as my research tells me is silicon but not sls free.
Then because I have greasy hair I use the body shop rainforest leave in conditioner.

Feck knows if this is by the book, but my hair seems pretty nice now. Nine of that silicon weighing it down.

I have been 'No Poo'ing for about six months. There are loads of cleansing conditioners on the market that will clean your hair without a lather. I have been using 'As I Am' coconut cowash (from Paks or other black hair shops) about twice a week and it's wonderful. No greasy stage.

I was a bit short of funds this month so am using Palmers Olive Oil Formula (£3.99, also from black hair shop) instead and it's good but nowhere near as nice as the As I Am (It's about £10 for a month's supply).

I will never go back to shampoo! I only have it washed every couple of months at the hairdresser. My hair is so much more hydrated now and I don't spend half my time/money on conditioning products to replace the lost moisture that shampoo strips out.

Hope this helps!

Mamalaz thank you that's so helpful. I might go to a health shop and see what I can find. There are a few shops in my local market than sell hair extensions and stuff they might have co only products. I think co only washes a couple of times a week, maybe once a week might be the best route for me. I have super thick hair and can imagine baking soda ending up in tears.

Bummer dexter that might end up being me!

Thursday I thought about going to lush and getting one of their bars

I will say that if your scalp is sensitive, you might find the lush bars too harsh. They leave your whole head really really squeaky clean IYSWIM.

I like it because I run most days, and I feel like they are the only thing that fully rids me of sweat [gross face]

littleSpud · 18/07/2014 22:16

I do conditioner only hair washing with my dc and their hair is lovely Smile

But I daren't take the plunge myself

I "no poo" with bicarbonate of soda and and Apple cider vinegar rinse, and have been doing it for 18 months. My hair is thick and curly, and prone to frizz. Until I ditched shampoo I had a huge amount of products to tame it! Now I leave it to dry, and run a bit of coconut oil through it when dry. That is all :)

I found it very trial and error initially, but would never go back to normal shampoo now. Incredible shine, really clean feeling, and just a healthier feeling scalp.

Jellybabyjen · 18/07/2014 23:31

I just started using 'grow gorgeous' from boots, its a no lather cleansing conditioner type thing. Hair very shiny so far but only used it twice. Have very thick curly frizzy mop so can only wash every 3/4 days. Was pretty expensive though so not sure i won't go back to the 'poo

ithoughtofitfirst · 19/07/2014 08:22

nanny success! That's awesome that it's working out for you.

jellybaby I'll have a look at it when I'm in boots today. Sounds like you have to wash your hair less frequently than me which sounds good to me!

Actually justput (been trying to find the link for you and failed miserably) I'm sure someone did a blog where they say on fine hair it almost works sooner, the 'orrible greasy stage, before it starts to look better. Plus if it's shorter the hair's natural oils distribute beteer down the shaft of the hair (less far to travel I guess.) WISH I COULD FIND THE LINK lol.

So... I reckon it definitely could work amazing if you're willing to give it a go... at least you wont be waiting as long for results. The best bit is if you hate it you can just wash it though I guess!

My hair sounds like yours justput, fine, greasy by day two, lacklustre. I would kill for curly or wavy thick hair

I developed dandruff (or a similar scalp nastiness) and the ONLY thing that worked was body shop ginger shampoo. I use this once or twice a week and I'm scared to stop using it. Between though, I co-wash only. I run most days too. My hair does look slightly greasy sometimes but not others and I struggle to know when it does and does't (as in what causes it or prevents it). I kind of get around it by sometimes washing my fringe separately on its own, and sticking some clip-in extensions in to distract.

I need a new system so I am going to have a google.

FWIW though, my hair is in MUCH better condition for not washing it daily like I used to. Grease aside, I think it is definitely better for your hair.

Been no poo for years. Had crap hair before now lovely if a bit wild somedays. My hairdresser has recommended my curly girl regime to other customers and they are delighted too. If you're curly this is seriously something you should try. Plus cheap!
